Preparation for MTH 011 or MTH 005. Review of fundamental arithmetic concepts and skills, with a focus on problem solving and an introduction to algebraic representation. Topics include arithmetic operations with whole numbers, fractions and decimals, percents, ratios and proportions, the English System of measurement, geometry, and an introduction to solving and graphing linear algebraic equations. Technology is used to enhance thinking and understanding, to solve problems, and to judge/verify results. ### Elementary Algebra I

Study designed for students with little or no background in algebra. Topics include real numbers, variable expressions, linear equations in one and two variables, inequalities, exponents and scientific notation, polynomial operations, and application problems. Emphasis on math study skills. Technology is used to enhance thinking and understanding, to solve problems, and to judge/verify results. Verbal, numerical, graphical and symbolic approaches assist in the discovery and communication of mathematical concepts. ### Elementary Algebra II

Study designed for students with a limited background in algebra in preparation for MTH 180. Topics include systems of linear equations, polynomial division and special products, factoring, rational expressions, radical expressions, quadratic equations, functions and application problems. Emphasis on math study skills. Technology is used to enhance thinking and understanding, to solve problems and to judge/verify results. Verbal, numerical, graphical and symbolic approaches assist in the discovery and communication of mathematical concepts. ### Career Mathematics

##### MTH011

Survey of practical mathematics; designed for students enrolled in certificate programs in technical areas. Topics include a basic math review; use of technology; systems of measurement; solutions of simple algebraic equations, including ratio and proportion; algebraic graphs; practical plane geometry; solid geometry; right angle geometry; interpretation of data including formulas, graphs and tables; descriptive statistics; personal financial calculations; and vectors. Traditional study is enhanced through collaborative group activities, demonstrations, projects, activities involving technology, hands-on construction, and models. 3 Credits (2.50 Lecture - 1.50 Lab)

Topics include linear equations, systems of linear equations, graphing, metric system, cash and trade discounts, markup, markdown, payroll, interest, descriptive statistics, interpretation of data from graphs and tables, depreciation, breakeven analysis, and valuation of inventory Emphasizes the interconnections of mathematical concepts. ### Technical Algebra and Trigonometry I

Study of intermediate algebra and trigonometry, designed to prepare students for course work in their technical majors. Survey of mathematical ideas developed by non-European cultures, such as African, Asian, South Pacific Islands, and native North, Central, and South America. Includes culture and specific examples from the following areas of mathematics: number theory, topology, probability, group theory and logical structures. Designed as a two-semester sequence, MTH155 is to be followed with a 1-credit lab course (MTH156) that includes travel to the Mayan World and a final project and presentation. 2 Credits (2 Lecture)

Survey of mathematical ideas developed by non-European cultures including, but not limited to, those of native Central and South America. Includes culture and specific examples from mathematics and applied mathematics, architecture, design, engineering, astronomy, and archaeoastronomy. Designed to follow MTH 155, this course includes travel to the Mayan World and a final project and presentation. 1 Credit (0 Lecture - 3 Lab)

### Elementary Statistics with Computer Applications

##### MTH160

Introduction of frequently applied statistical methods. Topics include graphical summaries, descriptive statistics, linear regression and correlation, elementary probability, binomial and normal distributions, sampling distrubitions and the Central Limit Theorem, and confidence intervals and tests of hypotheses for one and two samples. Computer applications include the use of plots, application of standard methods to real data, in-depth exploration of data, simulation as a learning tool, and screening data for errors. 4 Credits (3 Lecture - 3 Lab)

### Introduction to Geometry

##### MTH172

Survey of classical and modern geometry with an emphasis on conceptual development and applications. No prior exposure to geometry is assumed. Classical geometry topics include systems of measurement, planar and spatial figures, right triangles, area and volume, congruent/similar figures, geometric constructions, pattern recognition, symmetry, coordinate geometric, conic sections, and the geometry of growth. Modern geometry topics may include topics in Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. Study providing a pre-calculus algebra background and an introduction to trigonometry. Comprehensive pre-calculus algebra, trigonometry and introductory matrix theory. Topics include inverse, exponential, logarithmic, circular, and trigonometric functions; models and their graphs; analytic trigonometry; solution to trigonometric equations; vectors in the plane; trigonometric form of complex numbers; multivariable linear systems; systems of inequalities; matrices and determinants. ### Pre-Calculus

##### MTH190

Accelerated study for eligible students, providing a pre-calculus background through meaningful development of concepts, the connections among topics, and the application of mathematics to the solutions of realistic problems. Topics include algebra, functions (polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric), analytic trigonometry, and systems of equations. This accelerated, one-semester course replaces the MTH 180 & MTH 182 combination; may not be taken for credit by students who have successfully completed those courses. 4 Credits (4 Lecture)

### Statistical Methods with Computer Applications

Continuation of statistical theories and applications used widely in applied fields. Topics include experimental design and survey, use of the Chi-square, geometric and Poisson distributions, analysis of variance, analysis of regression and correlation, and non-parametric statistics.
