Introduction to Metallurgy

Introduction to the science of physical metallurgy. Topics covered include process metallurgy (geological location and presentation of ores, recovery, smelting, and refining, including chemical reactions), and physical metallurgy (metal properties, atomic and crystal structure, phase and isothermal transformation, testing material selection, and manufacturing processes). Discussion covers "why" metals exhibit their specific physical properties by employing the core methods of science: observation and measurement, conceptual models, problem solving, and critical evaluation of results of experiments. Particular emphasis is placed on the application of these scientific principles to modern manufacturing, selection of metals, and service characteristics.
