Reception & Gallery Talk: Zahra Nazari
The Gallery at Penn College will hold a reception and gallery talk on Thursday, January 19 at 4:30 p.m. Zahra Nazari was born in Iran. She received her MFA in Painting/Drawing from State University of New York, New Paltz; and her BFA from the School of Art & Architecture, Tabriz Islamic Art University, Iran. Most recently, she was awarded the 2016 Meyer Family Award for Contemporary Art from the Main Line Center; AIM Fellowship from the Bronx Museum; Residency, Cooper Union School of Art; and the Ruth Katzman Scholarship from the Art Students League Residency at Vyt. Spatial ambiguity over the course of cultural change is the explored theme of Nazari’s paintings and installations. Structures both ancient and contemporary are merged into abstract, organic forms with floating, collapsing and shifting environments. This unification is represented with both laws and chaos to convey the unsettled sensations caused by the transitions between different cultures.

Chevron Continues Support for Penn College Education, Training
Through its Workforce Development & Continuing Education office, Pennsylvania College of Technology has received $416,685 from Chevron U.S.A. to support scholarships, curriculum development and ongoing outreach in energy and manufacturing. Penn College will continue the promising practices first started through ShaleNET, a U.S. Department of Labor grant aimed at providing training and education in these important industry sectors. With an original investment surpassing $20 million from the Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration, ShaleNET leveraged 100 percent of the funds to build a sustainable workforce-development training program with the collaboration and in-kind support of industry, educators and the public workforce system. Chevron has supported the program since its inception. Chevron’s Appalachia Partnership Initiative is designed to address education and workforce development in 27 counties across southwestern Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio.
Winning Holiday Cards Announced in Year-End Tradition
The creativity on display in the holiday cards arrayed along the campus mall was honored in a traditional (and traditionally rainy) lighting ceremony inside and outside the Breuder Advanced Technology and Health Sciences Center the evening of Wednesday, November 30. The Penn College Veterans Club claimed the top prize among student groups. The Penn College Construction Association was second and Cru, third. In the Offices and Departments category, first place went to Mail & Document Services, participating employees of which will be served lunch at Le Jeune Chef Restaurant. Madigan Library was second and The College Store placed third; each of those winners will be treated to breakfast at Le Jeune Chef. The winners were selected by the 615 faculty/staff and student voters who chose their favorites in online balloting over the past week.
In volunteer work the dividends are always greater than the investment.
Thank you to the following alumni who have volunteered in the past month:
- Candace Bierly, 2006 Physical Fitness Specialist
