Susan began working as a part-time reference librarian in June 2005. From 2002 - 2005, she worked part-time as a Virtual Information Desk Librarian for the State System of Higher Education through North Hall Library at Mansfield University. She enjoys helping students and answering questions which are very different from those she gets in her full-time position as the Assistant Director of the Health Sciences Libraries for the Geisinger Health System. She manages 3 libraries for Geisinger, is the library's webmaster and systems administrator and helps provide reference services to Geisinger's 11,000 employees, including 800 physicians.
A Michigander by birth, Susan received her BA from Central Michigan University and her Master of Librarianship from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. In her extensive library career, she has worked as junior high school librarian, a cataloger for the Georgia Institute of Technology, a reference librarian for Southern Methodist University and the library manager for Mary Kay Cosmetics before coming to Geisinger as the reference librarian. She has found all of her library jobs to be rewarding, especially as she is constantly challenged to learn new things.
Susan is an enthusiastic patron of the James V. Brown Library where she checks out lots books! Her hobbies include conversing and reading mysteries in German, serving as the librarian for the German Heritage Society of the Susquehanna Valley, traveling, making baskets, scrapbooks, and gardening. She was her son's soccer and baseball coach for many years when he was young. Alas, he took up golfing, abandoned the team sports, and is about to graduate from PSU's Professional Golf Management program. Her least favorite hobby is babysitting for her son's ferret, Ferris. He's cute, but he bites.
