The Bachelor of Science degree in Building Science and Sustainable Design promotes a healthier, more energy efficient way to build which reduces negative environmental impacts and slows the depletion of natural resources. Students study sustainable approaches to materials, construction, site design, building design, and the generation of energy. In addition, students receive training in building science fundamentals related to the measurement of building performance. Students also learn skills vital to historic preservation and the renovation and re-use of existing buildings. Graduates should be equipped with the knowledge to design and/or construct buildings that make positive contributions to their communities.
Students may also choose to declare the Building Construction Technology associate-degree major (CB) by declaring a dual degree.
Graduates have a diverse set of skills and abilities that could prepare them for "green" careers focused on energy, renewable energy, and the environment.

Employment opportunities with a wide range of employers exist nationwide. Potential employers include architects, engineers, contractors, environmental organizations, building materials manufacturers, and government agencies. Potential job titles include LEED specialist, sustainable housing specialist, solar project manager, green building analyst/consultant, building science/sustainability researcher, sustainable designer, architectural project team member, sustainability professional, design/build professional, sustainable HVAC technology leader, facility manager and building commissioning specialist.
This major is subject to the transfer standards established by the College. Exceptions must be approved by the school dean.
Tools, Uniforms & Supplies
Students in the Building Science and Sustainable Design program are not required to purchase their own personal computers. Many of our classrooms are equipped with computers and we have open computer labs most evenings and during the weekend.
Still, many students choose to purchase a laptop computer for their own convenience. Those who wish to do so are advised to look into the minimum system requirements established by Autodesk for the various software packages used by the students in our program. For BSD students, these software packages include AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture, Revit Architecture, and 3D Studio Max. BSC students use only Revit Architecture. We generally use the most up-to-date release of each of these programs.
