WTC Crew Chief Information
Course Scheduling Tip
When scheduling a course, enter the participant's name on the registration form (though it's OK to use the supervisor's contact information). Please provide an e-mail address to receive a registration confirmation with course details, directions, and hotel information. Participants must provide an Application Review Committee (ARC) approval letter from the Department of Labor & Industry or payment prior to admittance to courses.
Required courses for Crew Chief Weatherization Certification:

- WTC149 - Diagnostic Approaches to Weatherization
- WTC153 - Baseload Auditing
- WTC165 - Test Out - Crew Chief
- WTC172 - EPA Certified Lead Renovator - Initial
- WTC182 - Customer Service for Weatherization Crew Chiefs and Auditors
- WTC191 - Advanced Weatherization Diagnostics
- WTC193 - DOE Lead Safe Weatherization
- WTC197 - OSHA 30 Construction
We consider the following sequence of courses to be optimum for learning and knowledge retention: Weatherization Tactics, Diagnostic Approaches to Weatherization, Advanced Weatherization Diagnostics, Baseload Auditing, and DOE Lead Safe Work Weatherization.
You must provide an Application Review Committee (ARC) approval letter from the Department of Labor & Industry or a voucher from your local PA CareerLink. If you do not have either of these, payment will be required prior to admittance to courses.
Certification "Bump Ups":
The Weatherization Training Center has received a number of requests from the training providers and from individuals for permission for "bump-ups" - receiving crew chief coursework when only an installer voucher has been issued or receiving auditor coursework when only a crew chief voucher has been issued. All individuals who would like to receive the next level of coursework must apply for the next level of coursework through the Application Review Committee. Example: an installer who wishes to take crew chief coursework must apply again through the Application Review Committee in order to take crew chief coursework.
The main reason for this decision is to ensure that individuals have adequate experience in the field before they are allowed the next level of coursework. This is especially true with individuals who wish to take auditor coursework – these individuals should have at least 6 months of field experience. In addition, WTC has received a number of requests from individuals who wish to take crew chief coursework but have not yet completed Installer coursework. These individuals must take the installer coursework first.
Updated Course Requirements and Deadlines (Updated 1/5/2011):
All weatherization workers who currently hold a certification will need to complete the following courses by the following dates in order for their certification to remain valid:
All Certified Workers
DOE Lead: March 31, 2011
Currently Certified Crew Chiefs
Baseload Auditing: August 31, 2011
Currently Certified Auditors
BPI Certification: July 1, 2011 (From the beginning of the certification process, all auditors were informed that they would need BPI Certification by this date.)
Baseload Auditing: August 31, 2011
Any worker currently enrolled in training who is not certified must also complete these courses in order to become certified. In addition, Customer Service has been added to the Crew Chief and Auditor curriculum. The Customer Service course is NOT retroactive – individuals currently holding crew chief and auditor certifications do not need to take customer service for their certification to remain valid.
Currently certified individuals completing Baseload and/or BPI Certification will be able to count these courses towards any future requirements for continuing education.
