Practical Nursing at North Campus
Nursing is an art and a progressive science dedicated to the betterment of human welfare. Its aim is to assist the individual or family in the prevention of illness, restoration to health, adaptation to long-term illness and provision for comfort when return to health no longer is possible. Practical nursing education is a process through which a student acquires knowledge, skills, attitudes and judgment to provide safe nursing care under the direction of a licensed professional nurse (RN), licensed physician (MD), or a licensed dentist (DDS).
The practical nursing curriculum at Pennsylvania College of Technology's North Campus provides a base of knowledge and experience necessary to become a safe practitioner and operates under the assumption that there is a real need and place for the practical nurse as a member of the health team, sharing in the care of patients within the accepted role of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the Practical Nursing National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) for licensure in the State of Pennsylvania as an LPN and will be prepared to seek employment in multiple health-care settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, physician offices and clinics, and home care agencies. A person involved in a legal issue involving alcohol or substance abuse, a misdemeanor, or a felonious act may be denied licensure by law.
The program is scheduled over the course of one calendar year with classes and clinical on Monday through Thursday. It is divided into three levels of instruction for a total of 1,504 hours. The calendar includes a two-week vacation at Christmas and one day off each for Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July. Attendance is mandatory at classes held at the North Campus and clinical. Our affiliation with Laurel Health System will allow nursing experiences at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital, the Green Home, and other local facilities.
