Professional Office Skills Program

A new seven month basic office administration program, designed by Workforce Development & Continuing Education to prepare students for employment in a variety of entry level clerical and office support. The noncredit, clock-hour program includes training in the skills necessary to keep offices and businesses running smoothly. A 160-hour externship will be the capstone of the program. Students will be able to sit for certification exams in Microsoft™ Office Specialist and will be prepared for postitions such as secretarial, receptionist and clerks, customer service and administrative support.

Medical (Office) Assistant Program

A nine month certification program at the North Campus began in August 2007 and will conclude in May 2008. The program consists of classroom and laboratory instruction to prepare participants to perform general administrative, receptionist, and basic clinical procedures in in doctor offices, clinics, medical facilities and human-service agencies. Medical office assistants primarily work in outpatient settings keeping offices and clinics running smoothly. Employment of medical office assistants is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations as the health services industry expands. Students completing the program will be eligible to take the Registered Medical Assistant certification exam offered by the Association of American Medical Technologists for designation as an R.M.A. This is a noncredit program developed by Workforce Development & Continuing Education of Penn College.  The next scheduled start date is currently undecided.

Health Career Awareness Day

Governor Rendell has designates a week in November as Health Career Awareness Week. The North Campus hosted a Health Career Awareness Day on November 5, 2008 and area high schools are invited to bring students interested in a career in the health care field. Health career professionals were on-hand to explain their jobs and to answer questions from students. Hands-on activities and information tables from educational providers were available.

Nursing Assistant for High School Students

The North Campus, in cooperation with the Green Home, offers a nursing assistant course for seniors from area high schools. This course, approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, is held one day a week, from January until May, ultimately leading to the designation of C.N.A. The primary goal of the program is to allow academic students who are interested in nursing as a career to explore the responsibilities and duties involved in the field of healthcare. At the end of the program, students are eligible to take the Red Cross competency exam and, if successful, will be added to the National Registry of Nursing Assistants. Interested students should contact their guidance counselors for more information and may contact the North Campus at (570) 724-7703 for an application.
