WDCE Course Descriptions

WTC - Weatherization

WTC113
Combustion Analysis & Retrofit (Oil)
Designed to train participants to perform tests particular to oil-fired systems and to recommend retrofits. Topics covered include combustion analysis, safety controls, ventine, heat rise testing as well as tune-ups and burner replacements. New developments in oil-fired units will be discussed. PA WEATHERIZATION SUBGRANTEES AND THEIR CONTRACTORS ARE ADMITTED AT NO CHARGE. (SELECT "OTHER" UNDER PAYMENT OPTIONS).
Prerequisite(s): Introduction to Residential Heating Systems

WTC114
Combustion Analysis & Retrofit (Gas)
Designed to train participants to perform test particular to all types of gas-fired systems and to recommend retrofits. Besides topics of comb ustion analysis, safety controls, vent safety, carbon monoxide measurem ent, and heat rise measurements, the treatment of on and off-cycle loss PA WEATHERIZATION SUBGRANTEES AND THEIR CONTRACTORS ARE ADMITTED AT NO CHARGE. (SELECT "OTHER" UNDER PAYMENT OPTIONS).
Prerequisite(s): Introduction to Residential Heating Systems

WTC135
Weatherization Tactics
Theory, methods, and techniques for installation of weatherization materials. This course will focus on demonstration and hands-on application of weatherstripping, insulation, ventilation glazing, caulking, hand/power tools, safety, door, and window installation. Includes theory and application of more difficult weatherization procedures: installation of prime doors, windows, minor tool repair, plaster and sheet rock repair and more complex insulation procedures. PA WEATHERIZATION SUBGRANTEES AND THEIR CONTRACTORS ARE ADMITTED AT NO CHARGE. (SELECT "OTHER" UNDER PAYMENT OPTIONS).

WTC139
Home Energy Auditing
Against a backdrop of degree day theory, concepts behind calculating by measure, saving payback's, building science, infiltration theory, approved retrofit lists and codes the participants will learn home energy auditing techniques and apply them in lab exercises. Techniques include blower door guided air leakage tests, heat systems testing and analysis, material estimation, measuring and working with a field data collection form. PA WEATHERIZATION SUBGRANTEES AND THEIR CONTRACTORS ARE ADMITTED AT NO CHARGE. (SELECT "OTHER" UNDER PAYMENT OPTIONS).
Prerequisite(s): Diagnostic Approaches to Weatherization, Advanced Diagnostics to Weatherization, Combustion Analysis & Retrofit (Oil), Combustion Analysis & Retrofit (Gas), Introduction to Residential Heating Systems

WTC148
Advanced Weatherization Diagnostics
Presented against a backdrop of the interaction of the building shell and mechanical systems, students will learn how to use a manometer and other tools to evaluate chimney safety performance and pressure imbalances of forced air systems. Detecting air leakage paths through zonal testing, and duct leakage through pressure pan testing will also be covered. The course will utilize both lecture and hands on activities. This is a competency based course where certificates of completion will be offered to those who successfully complete the written and lab tests. The course, "Diagnostic Approaches to Weatherization" is a pre-requisite. Students are required to bring a digital manometer. PA WEATHERIZATION SUBGRANTEES AND THEIR CONTRACTORS ARE ADMITTED AT NO CHARGE. (SELECT "OTHER" UNDER PAYMENT OPTIONS).
Prerequisite(s): Diagnostic Approaches to Weatherization

WTC149
Diagnostic Approaches to Weatherization
Participants will learn principles of air leakage, how houses perform as influenced by pressure differences caused by increase air tightening, mechanical exhaust devices, moisture movement, etc. Methods for determining cost effective air sealing guidelines, minimum ventilation requirements for occupants. Participants will learn how to use a blower door to test air leakage and guide air sealing efforts. PA WEATHERIZATION SUBGRANTEES AND THEIR CONTRACTORS ARE ADMITTED AT NO CHARGE. (SELECT "OTHER" UNDER PAYMENT OPTIONS)

WTC151
Lead Safe Work Practices
This course is designed to make weatherization workers aware of the hazards of exposure to lead based paint both to themselves and their clients. Methods, techniques, personal protection, engineering controls and proper clean up procedures while working in homes that contain lead based paint will be covered.

WTC154
Weatherization Crew Safety
This course will give the student working knowledge of safety equipment and systems used to perform weatherization work. Personal safety issues along with issues specific to individual pieces of construction equipment will be discussed. OSHA requirements/guidelines specific to the construction industry will be thoroughly reviewed. Students will receive OSHA mandated training on Respiratory Protection, Hearing Protection, Fall Protection, and Ladder Safety.

WTC162
Train The Trainer
This course will prepare Weatherization Trainers to deliver educational programs to the Weatherization workforce in their region by implementing universal adult learning principles and applying effective presentation skills. REGISTRATION PROCESS: PA WEATHERIZATION AGENCY SUBGRANTEE PERSONNEL HAVE FIRST PRIORITY, AGENCY SUBCONTRACTORS SECOND, AND PRIVATE CONTRACTORS THIRD. ALL POTENTIAL STUDENTS SHOULD BE AWARE ENROLLMENT IN CLASS IS LIMITED AND ARE ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS. PA WEATHERIZATION SUBGRANTEES AND THEIR SUBCONTRACTORS ARE ADMITTED AT NO CHARGE AND SHOULD CHOOSE SECTION 2, SELECT "OTHER" UNDER PAYMENT OPTION OPTION; PRIVATE CONTRACTORS AND NON-SUBGRANTEES SHOULD CHOOSE SECTION 4

WTC163
Introduction to Residential Heating Systems
Participants will be familiar with fundamentals of common residential central space heating systems. It includes discussion of heat, oil, and gas process, chimneys appliance types, operating and safety controls, electricity and fuel delivery. PA WEATHERIZATION SUBGRANTEES AND THEIR CONTRACTORS ARE ADMITTED AT NO CHARGE. (SELECT "OTHER" UNDER PAYMENT OPTIONS).
