HSC - Health Sciences

HSC167
Beginning Medical Terminology
This course is designed for those who are interested in developing the ability to read and understand the language of medicine. Useful for those entering employment in the medical field, for those engaged in the art of healing, and for those desiring a personal knowledge of medical terms.

HSC183
Medical Language Editor - Blended Instruction
Medical Language Editors interpret, edit, and transcribe dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals. Medical language editing creates the legal documentation of medical care provided and facilitates the delivery of healthcare services and the reimbursement process. The program includes 780 hours of classroom and hands-on, distance learning study, and 240 hours of internship experience. For the transcription editing module of the program, students will be expected to work independent of classroom instruction and adhere to a formal schedule for progress. Upon completion, students will be able to sit for the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) exam offered by the American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT).
Prerequisite(s): Demonstrated working use of the English language, typing speed of 50 wpm, and ability to hear/understand spoken language. Successful completion of a basic entry level skills test is necessary prior to acceptance.

Introduction to Medical Billing and Coding
Changing government regulations and the growth of the healthcare field have increased the demand for medical coders and billing staff. This course will introduce the concepts of ICD-9 and CPT coding and will help participants to understand the correlation between coding, billing, and reimbursement. Course will include some medical terminology.

Intermediate Medical Terminology - Level II
This course is designed for those who are interested in enhancing their ability to read and understand the language of medicine. Useful for those entering employment in the medical field, for those engaged in the art of healing, and for those desiring a personal knowledge of medical terms.
Prerequisite(s): Beginning Medical Terminology or permission of the instructor

HSC214
Medical Billing and Coding Part II
Changing government regulations and the growth of the healthcare field have increased the demand for medical coders and billing staff. This course will continue the concepts of ICD-0 and CPT coding learned in the Introductory course and will help participants to understand the correlation between coding, billing, and reimbursement. Course will include some medical terminology.
Prerequisite(s): Medical Billing and Coding Part I

HSC215
Medical Billing and Coding Part III
This is the final course in a series which prepares students to sit for a national credentialing exam in ICD-9 and CPT coding. The cost of the certification exam will be the responsibility of the student. Parts I and II must be completed before registering for Part III.

Do No Harm: Therapeutic Touch for Caregivers
Are you giving care to a patient, relative, or friend who might benefit from gentle massage which is known to enhance well-being, decrease anxiety, and reduce nausea and fatigue? This course will examine the benefits of therapeutic touch with appropriate massage techniques for those with cancer and other disorders.

Intro. to Massage Therapy & Bodywork
For a touch of relaxation and well-being, try this beginner's course to learn the benefits and techniques of massage. An experienced, certified massage therapist will introduce topics such as history and theory, basic touch skills for massage, and self-care techniques to ensure comfort during massage.

Key Skills for Transitioning to a Nurse Manager Role
The current staffing crisis in most hospitals has resulted in many promotions of staff nurses into managerial positions for which they are unprepared. Many hospitals do not have nurse manager orientation programs so they are not learning the essential foundation supervisory and leadership skills every mid-level manager needs. This program is designed to equip new and experienced nurse managers with the foundation of leadership skills they need to succeed. Learn how to define leadership, identify characteristics of an effective leader, define coaching and compare it to leadership, develop a plan for the first 100 days in your new role as a nurse manager, and much more.

HSC404
Basic Health Care Spanish
This basic Spanish course is designed statregically for medical personnel to communicate with the Spanish-speaking world through audio, verbal, reading, and writing skills. Emphasis on key phases and vocabularies along with cognates will enable medical personnel to identify with the Spanish language. This approach enables personnel to comprehend and retain the language. Grammar structure, concentrated vocabularies, common dialectical variation, and cultural diversities will be addressed.

HSC405
American Sign Language with a Health Care Emphasis
This six-hour course will educate participants about specific techniques that may be used to assist in the care of patients who are deaf or hard of hearing. Topics to be covered include dealing with issues a deaf or hard-of-hearing person faces in a health care-related setting, learning how to work with interpreters in medical situations, and learning signing specific to the health care field.
Prerequisite(s): American Sign Language or permission of instructor

NAPNES Pharmacology Certification for LPN's
This course is intended for LPNs who are familiar with the nursing process and who desire to become more knowledgeable about pharmacology. Topics covered include: general principles in pharmacology, pharmacology and the role of the LPN, drug therapy affecting the nervous system and special senses, drug therapy affecting kidney and body fluid composition, drug therapy affecting the cardiovascular system, drug therapy in infection, drug therapy in cancer, drug therapy affecting the gastrointestinal system and nutrition, drug therapy affecting respiratory function, drug therapy affecting endocrine and reproductive function, and drug therapy affecting skin.

Medical Transcription Blended

Medical Billing & Coding Specialist Certificate
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of billing and coding specialists is expected to increase greatly over the next 10 years.This medical billing and coding certificate is for those interested in obtaining the skills needed to work in handling proper insurance claims in a physician's office or medical insurance company using CPT and ICD-9-CM for coding.Some of the topics covered are medical terminology, medical insurances, and third party reimbursements,filing claims,completing common insurance forms, delinquent and denied claims,and billing procedures.After completion of the course,participants will be able to sit for the National Healthcareer Association certification exam for designation of Certified Billing and Coding Specialist(CBCS).

HSC900
Medical Assistant - Level I and II
This program consists of classroom and laboratory instruction to prepare participants to perform general administrative, receptionist, and basic clinical procedures in doctor's offices, clinics, medical facilities, and human service agencies. Medical assistants primarily work in outpatient settings keeping offices and clinics running smoothly. The Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential is offered by the American Medical Technologies (AMT). NEXT PROGRAM WILL BE HELD FALL 2010.
