Carl Shaner, Student Health Services Director

Carl joined the Penn College Student Health Services staff in 2002 after his ten-year employment with the Susquehanna Health System. In addition to directing the Student Health Services department, he focuses on patient care, promoting healthy lifestyles, and addressing public health issues that impact the college community.

He holds a B.S. in General Studies from Misericordia University, a B.S. in Nursing from Lycoming College, and a Masters in Nursing from the University of Phoenix with an emphasis on education and administration. Carl is an active member of the American College Health Association, currently serving as the Secretary for the Nurse-Directed Section.  He is also a member of the Mid-Atlantic College Health Association.

In his spare time, he enjoys coaching wrestling and soccer and spending time outdoors with his three sons and his wife, Cindy.

Krista Sampsell, College Nurse

Krista has been employed by Penn College since August of 2004. Before joining the Penn College staff, she was employed by Geisinger Medical Center located in Danville, PA as a Labor and Delivery Nurse. Although she handles many of the behind-the-scenes activities in the Student Health Services department, she primarily focuses on providing care for ill students and promotes health education.

Krista graduated from Muncy High School and continued her education, earning her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from The Pennsylvania State University in 1997.She is currently in the process of becoming a volunteer counselor at the Pregnancy Care Center, located in Williamsport, PA.

In her spare time, Krista enjoys shopping and spending time with her husband, two sons, and extended family and friends. She also looks forward to attending Penn State football games every fall to cheer on her alma mater.
 

Leann Ritter , College Nurse

Leann joined the Penn College staff in October 2004. Her role as a nurse in Student Health Services includes, but is not limited to, health education, administering immunizations, counseling, and direct patient care.

Leann graduated from the former Williamsport School of Nursing. She has been employed for more than 25 years in a local family practice office.

Outside of work, Leann is active in her church, enjoys shopping, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends.

Ellen Cero, Secretary/Receptionist

Ellen joined Penn College in June 2007. As the Student Health Services Secretary, she is the first smiling face that you will meet when you enter the office. Some of Ellen’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, entering medical data, answering phones, scheduling appointments, and filing worker’s compensation claims. Previously, she held the position of office manager for two local cardiac surgeons and orthopedists.

Ellen lives locally with her husband, son, and daughter. In her free time, Ellen enjoys working in her yard, shopping, and supporting her two children in their extracurricular activities.
 

Kristi Hammaker, Health and Fitness Specialist

Kristi joined the Penn College staff as Fitness Center Supervisor in 2000. She is responsible for managing the Fitness Center staff; ensuring safe and effective use of the equipment, and providing interesting and educational programming for Fitness Center patrons.

In 2007, Kristi's duties were expanded as she assumed the role of Health & Fitness Specialist. She is now additionally responsible for Assisting the Director of Health Services in the development of wellness activities for the college community. Specifically, she is responsible for programs regarding general health awareness and providing information on nutrition, physical conditioning, weight loss, contraception, drug and alcohol, mental health, and other related topics.

Kristi completed her undergraduate degree at Clarion University of Pennsylvania where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications. She then earned a Master of Health Administration degree from The Pennsylvania State University. Additionally, Kristi is an A.F.A.A. certified Personal Fitness Trainer and an American Red Cross Instructor. She teaches as adjunct faculty in the College’s Fitness and Lifetime Sports Department.
