Parent & Family Weekend is September 19-21, 2008.

Online registration for Parent & Family Weekend is now closed. You may still register your family for meals and events by calling the Student Activities Office at (570) 327-4763. Check the Web site regularly for updates and schedule changes.

Friday, September 19

Registration and Information

Time: 5-8 p.m.

Location: Bush Campus Center, Lobby

Pick up your welcome packet, including useful information about Penn College and the Williamsport area, as well as event listings and other special programs.

Enjoy dinner on your own in Williamsport or on campus at Le Jeune Chef Restaurant (for reservations, call (570) 320-CHEF).

Dessert Reception in The Gallery at Penn College Pre-registration Required

Time: 7-8:30 p.m.

Location: The Gallery at Penn College, Madigan Library, third floor

Cost: $9 parents and family guests; $5.50 for students; $3.50 children (ages 5-12); free children (under 5)

Drop in during this time to sample delectable desserts catered by Le Jeune Chef Restaurant and walk through The Gallery featuring work from Judith Kalina. Meet and greet with Penn College President Dr. Davie Jane Gilmour as well as Penn College staff and academic school deans. Gather useful information about Penn College departments and the Williamsport area.

The Magic of David Hall

Time: 8:30-9:30 p.m.

Location: Klump Academic Center, Auditorium

Cost: Free

Boston Magician David Hall's award-winning performances are high-energy, full of witty comedy, stunning slight-of-hand, and mind-blowing miracles. Magic Dave's show is a blend of comedy magic half from the street and half from the stage, which makes up one funny show on a level all its own.

Performance is generally family-friendly, but may contain mild adult humor or innuendo.

Parent and Family Weekend Kick-off Events

Penn College Then and Now
Time: 10-11 a.m.
Location: Thompson Professional Development Center, Mt. Laurel Room
Dr. Dan Doyle presents a historic look at Penn College's development from a local technical institute to community college to the Penn State affiliate it is today. The discussion also examines how Penn College plans to grow and develop in the coming years.
 

Brunch with the President and Penn College In Style: College Store Fashion Show Pre-registration Required

Time: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Location: Field House

Cost: $9.50 students and adults; $4.75 children (ages 5-12); Free children (under 5)

Seating: Limited to 400

Join Dr. Gilmour in the Field House to kick off the morning with brunch catered by Le Jeune Chef Restaurant. While you are enjoying your meal, students will model the newest in Penn College fashion. All items in the show will be discounted in the College Store Saturday only!

Festival of Fun

Time: 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

Location: Bush Campus Center, Lobby

Cost: Free

Children of all ages enjoy interactive games and activities. Take home a Penn College souvenir!

Around Town

Williamsport Historic Trolley Tour Pre-registration Required

Time: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (tours leave the Bush Campus Center every hour)

Seating: Limited to 55-75 persons each tour

Reservations: Sign up online to reserve your spot on the tour. Open seats will be available for reservation at the Bush Campus Center, Information Desk, beginning Friday, September 19 at 5 p.m.

Cost: Free

Spend part of your day touring Williamsport's historic neighborhoods and the downtown area. The tours last approximately 45 minutes. Trolleys are accessible to persons in wheelchairs.

Hiawatha River Boat Public Cruise

Time: 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Cost: $7.50 adults; $6.50 seniors; $3.50 children (ages 2-12)

Take a ride on Williamsport’s Paddlewheel Riverboat. Stop by the Hiawatha docks at Susquehanna State Park to purchase tickets for the cruise of your choice. First come, first served. For more information, call Williamsport City Bus at (570) 326-2500. Tickets are available on the day of the cruise. Directions to the docks and coupons for $1 off will be available at the registration table.

Interactive Workshops Pre-registration Required

Cost: $5 students, parents, and family guests

Mixology

Time: noon - 1:30 p.m.

Location: Hager Lifelong Education Center, Room B132

Students from the School of Hospitality, under the direction of Sommelier Neal Palmer, will amaze your taste buds with their exciting and unique non-alcoholic drinks. Participants will be able to sample the refreshments and receive a recipe book to make and enjoy the drinks at home.

Keeping it Together: Learning to Weld

Time: 2 - 5 p.m.

Location: Avco-Lycoming Metal Trades Center, Room 105

Penn College offers one of the premier programs for Welding and Fabrication Engineering Technology. Come learn basic welding techniques from Instructor David Cotner and take home a hand-made souvenir. Participants must be age 16 or older.

Location: Breuder Advanced Technology & Health Sciences Center, West Wing, second floor; Bardo Gymnasium (for Fitness tour)
Tour some of the most popular classrooms and laboratories at Penn College. Guided by Penn College students, you will learn more about these Health Sciences programs and have a chance to see where students work and learn on a daily basis.

Innovative Technologies Applied in the Natural Sciences: Tour the Earth Science Center

Time: noon and 2 p.m.

Location: Schneebeli Earth Science Center

Home of our Diesel Technology, Heavy Construction Equipment Technology, Electric Power Generation Technology, Ornamental Horticulture, and Forest Technology majors, the Earth Science Center is an important part of our academic program. Visit the 350-acre facility and get a behind-the-scenes tour from one of our students.

A Penn College-sponsored bus will leave the Bush Campus Center Loop at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and will return to main campus at approximately 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. If you wish to drive yourself, visit the Bush Campus Center, Information Desk for directions.

Penn College in Flight: Tour the Lumley Aviation Center

Time: noon - 2 p.m.

Location: Lumley Aviation Center

Located at the Williamsport Regional Airport, Penn College’s Lumley Aviation Center offers some of the finest aviation instructional facilities in the nation for our FAA-approved programs. and faculty honored with the FAA’s diamond award, the highest level award based on faculty training. Visit the facility and get a behind-the-scenes tour from one of our students and faculty.

A Penn College-sponsored bus will leave the Bush Campus Center Loop at 11:45 a.m., 12:15, 12:45, and 1:30 p.m. and will return to main campus at approximately 12:45, 1:30, 2, and 2:45 p.m. If you wish to drive yourself, visit the Bush Campus Center, Information Desk for directions.

Connecting: Getting Involved at Penn College

Time: 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Location: Thompson Professional Development Center, Mt. Laurel Room

Learn more about what it means to be a Penn College student. Kimberly Cassel, Director of Student Activities, will discuss the myriad of opportunities available to Penn College students, including getting involved with clubs and organizations, participating in leadership and community service opportunities, having fun at evening and weekend events, and studying abroad in places such as Italy, Germany, Mexico, and Japan.

Victorian House & Garden Tours

Time: 1-3 p.m.

Location: Victorian House and Victorian House Garden

Tour the Victorian House with a Penn College Student Ambassador, and enjoy the beautifully landscaped Victorian House gardens.

Intramural Family Challenge

Time: 1-4 p.m.

Location: Athletic Field near the Field House

Competitions include: Rick Barry Foul Shooting Contest and Wiffle Ball Homerun Derby Competition.
Stop by and challenge other families to a friendly competition. Other outdoor games will be featured as well which include washers and ladder golf.

Beyond Penn College: Career Development

Time: 2-3:30 p.m.

Location: Thompson Professional Development Center, Mt. Laurel Room

Success in the job market starts while you are at Penn College. Stop in for a presentation to find out what parents can do to encourage their student to take advantage of job opportunities and the services of the Career Services Office. Career Services staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Financial Aid: Beyond the First Year

Time: 4-5 p.m.

Location: Thompson Professional Development Center, Mt. Laurel Room

Timing is crucial to future financial aid success. Stop in for a short presentation to find out what parents and students need to do next. Financial Aid staff will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Evening Events

Tethered Hot Air Balloon Rides

Time: 5 - 7 p.m.

Location: Penn College Practice Field

Cost: Free

See Penn College and the surrounding Williamsport area from the air in a tethered hot air balloon!

Dinner Catered by Le Jeune Chef Restaurant Pre-registration Required

Time: 5:30 p.m.

Location: Field House

Cost: $15.50 students and adults; $7.75 children (ages 5-12); Free children (under 5)

Seating: Limited to 400

Join us in the Field House for a hearty home-style dinner catered by Le Jeune Chef Restaurant.

Casino Night

Time: 7 - 10 p.m.

Location: Bush Campus Center, Penn's Inn

Cost: Free

Enjoy the life of a big spender! Use play money to win big at blackjack, roulette, poker, bingo, and other games of chance. Use your winnings to bid on great prizes at the family auction.
