SMART Girls

Pennsylvania College of Technology developed Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies (SMART) Girls to counter an alarming academic and social trend: Girls tend to shy away from math and sciences as they enter adolescence and their important high school years.

SMART Girls provides young females, in grades 6 - 11, the opportunity to experience math and science as a foundation for careers in technology. Hands-on experiences will range from crushing concrete (working with compression strength) to cyber challenges (creating Web pages).

Dream It – Design It – Do It: It’s a 3D Summer in Careers Never Imagined

This year’s summer camp will engage participants in the art of 3D Printing and a theme of 3D!  Dream It – Design It – Do It will give each girl an opportunity to experience the art of 3D printing from beginning to end.  Participants will work in teams to build a 3D printer, design and print, and ultimately demonstrate their creations at a trade-show like event (open to the community).  In addition to the project-based learning model, girls will experience daily themes of Career Development, Economic Development, and Workforce Development (3D’s of the Career, Education, and Work Standards) woven through the technical and soft skill experiences.

Students need no prior-knowledge of 3D printing or design to be successful at this camp – just a willingness to work together in a team, learn new technology, and have a great time!

Event is limited to the 40 girls registered.

Goals

  • Expose students to career options in emerging technologies
  • Encourage a strong foundation in high school math and sciences
