Basic Automotive Servicing Tasks
- Use shop manual to find a specific repair procedure for a given vehicle
- Perform a complete lube, oil, and filter change
- Perform automatic transmission fluid and filter change
- Perform a cooling system drain and refill
- Perform a cooling system performance check
- Perform a new car set-up, including completion of the necessary form

Electrical System Tasks
- Check applied voltage drops in electrical circuits using digital voltmeters; determine needed repairs
- Check current flow in electrical circuits and components using an ammeter; determine needed repairs
- Check continuity and resistance in electrical circuits and components using a digital ohmmeter; determine needed repairs
- Check electrical circuits using jumper wires; determine needed repairs
- Inspect, test, and replace fusible links, circuit breakers, and fuses
Battery Concerns
- Diagnose the cause(s) of abnormal battery drain; determine needed repairs
- Inspect, clean, fill, and replace battery
- Perform battery capacity (load, high-rate discharge) test; determine; needed service
- Maintain or restore electronic memory functions
- Recharge a weak or dead battery
- Inspect and clean battery posts and cable ends
- Jump-start a vehicle using battery cables or power supply
Starting System Concerns
- Perform starter current draw test; determine needed repairs
- Perform starter circuit voltage drop test; determine needed repairs
- Remove, bench test and replace/reinstall starter
Charging System Concerns
- Diagnose charging system problems that cause an undercharge, no charge, or an overcharge condition
- Inspect and adjust alternator drive belts; replace as needed
- Perform charging system output test; determine needed repairs
- Perform charging circuit voltage drop tests; determine needed repairs
- Remove and replace/reinstall alternator
- Disassemble, clean, inspect, and replace alternator brushes and/or voltage regulator
Ignition System Concerns
- Perform cylinder power balance tests
- Inspect and test ignition system secondary using and ignition oscilloscope
- Inspect and test ignition system secondary using SBDS
- Inspect and test ignition primary circuit wiring and components
- Inspect and test an ignition Hall triggering device
- Inspect and test a variable reluctance sensor
