Student Field Trip Focuses on Careers, Sustainability

Fourteen members of Penn College's Horticulture Club, along with faculty adviser Carl J. Bower Jr., made an April 17 visit to Longwood Gardens and a private residential site belonging to landscape architect Margot Taylor, both in Kennett Square.

The Taylor property is the first residential site in Pennsylvania on the Sustainable Sites Initiative, a program designed to provide voluntary national guidelines and performance benchmarks for sustainable land design, construction and maintenance practices.

Horticulture Grads Return to Judge High School 'Field Day' at ESC

Seventeen students took part in the third annual Penn College High School Horticulture Field Day, held at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center.

"This is a way to bring some high school students on campus to showcase our program, talk to our graduates and let them know there are many career paths in the 'green' industry – and have some friendly competition where they can win some prizes and some recognition for themselves and their schools," said Carl J. Bower Jr., horticulture instructor.

Penn College Horticulture Students Among 'Career Day' Competitors

Students from Pennsylvania College of Technology were among the Top 10 finishers in their respective categories during the recent Professional Landscape Network's Student Career Days competition in Alabama.

Horticulture instructor Carl J. Bower Jr. and alumnus Ronald Burger accompanied the group to the 37th annual Career Days, held March 7-10 at Auburn University. In addition to meeting prospective employers, the students competed in events directly related to the skills necessary for a "green" profession.
