Refurbishing a CAT Dozer
In our Powertrain and Brake Systems lab, we were assigned the project of refurbishing a CAT D5 dozer. After cribbing the machine, we began the first step of removing the tracks and moving the tracks outside of the lab area.
We then began removing the guards so we could continue our work.
To verify that we were following proper procedures, we consulted the service manual.
Assured that we were heading in the right direction, we began removing the track frame from the machine.
Off came the rollers from the track frame.
With the track frame removed, we could now prepare the machine to install new sprocket segments.
To keep the project moving and complete on-time, we needed to begin looking up the parts to be replaced and submitting our order.
Fabricating new brackets to weld onto track frame to hold the guards.
New rollers arrived and we were ready to begin installing the new rollers. We were consulting the service program on the laptop for torque specifications.
Progress continues, as we reassembled the track frame with the new rollers and we are now ready to install the completed track frame.
The project begins to take shape as we install the new idler on the track frame.
Shimming the new idler required patience and careful work.
The shiny new track pads arrived and are now ready to be installed.
As the newly installed track pads are installed, the finished project is nearing completion.
And on an early spring day, we tested the machine and made last minute adjustments. The project took us approximately three weeks and we returned a machine ready for optimal performance.
