Communication and Literature Department

Pennsylvania College of Technology's Communication and Literature Department offers a number of core courses in English, reading, and speech - including English Composition I and II, Technical and Professional Communication, Fundamentals of Speech, and Interpersonal Communication. In addition, the department offers literature and other advanced composition and communication electives.

About the curriculum

Composition Courses

These courses help students develop sound principles of writing, including the ability to:

  • define a significant topic or issue to write about;
  • compose, develop, and support thesis statements and topic sentences;
  • research topics;
  • plan, organize, and draft essays;
  • revise and proofread their writing.

Bachelor's degree students are required to take English Composition I and either English Composition II or Technical and Professional Communication. Associate's degree candidates are required to take English Composition I and some programs require English Composition II or Technical and Professional Communication. Advanced courses in Composition include technical writing, rhetoric, and proposal and grant writing.

Literature Courses

Literature courses include World Literature, Early American Literature, and American Literature Since 1865 as well as a number of courses on specialized topics and genres.

Reading Courses

Reading courses are offered for students with limited reading success and students who wish to develop reading and study skills.

Speech Communication Courses

Two departmental course offerings, Fundamentals of Speech (SPC101) and Interpersonal Communication (SPC201), satisfy the speech communication requirement. The former focuses on public speaking and rhetorical skills while the latter deals with person-to-person communication. In addition, the department offers several advanced communication courses.
