Student Serves at National Green Industry Conference

The president of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Horticulture Club recently served as a student ambassador at the recent Green Industry Conference in Louisville, Ky. Jeremy L. Thorne, of Sugarloaf was one of eight students chosen nationwide for the Oct. 26-29 event.

Garden Showcases Talent from Landscape Classes

Landscape Operations class creates memorial garden at First United Methodist Church in Montgomery, PA.

Students in Landscape Operation class returned to a local church this semester to get real world experience in the community by installing a landscape. The church, also the site of a past PLANET Day of Service, is where students in the Computer Landscape Design class gained experience in 2010. One of the student designs from the 2010 class was installed this year.

Trip Includes Alumni Visit at Hershey Gardens

Students, faculty, and staff got a chance to see firsthand how the products that they regularly design and install in landscapes are made. Horticulture club students visited an EP Henry plant in Parker Ford, to learn more about concrete pavers and wall material. The next stop was Hershey Gardens in Hershey, where the group met with 2010 graduate Alyssa Richner, who takes care of the children's garden and understand the joys and challenges of working for a public garden.

Children's Learning Center Among Student Projects

This semester was busy in many of classes and labs, giving students experience in laying sod, design work in the community, working with some youngsters planting bulbs, and various campus improvements at our Earth Center Science Campus. Students also helped to lay sod on campus at the College's nationally-accredited Children's Learning Center. Youngsters from the center later visited the Earth Science Center to plant bulbs with students enrolled in the Landscape Operations class. Landscape Design students gained design experience while creating many new landscape areas at a local retirement community.

Poinsettia Crop Benefitted Students

Containerized Plant Production class grows and sells poinsettias to benefit clubs and purchase instructional supplies.
Students in the Containerized Plant Production class were responsible for growing the College's poinsettia crop this fall. Various colors and varieties brightened the greenhouse and taught students valuable lessons. The poinsettias were sold to the public and proceeds benefitted clubs and instructional supplies for students in the School of Natural Resources Management.
