Twelve students from Pennsylvania College of Technology's horticulture program participated in internships throughout the state this summer.
Students in the landscape technology and plant production emphasis were able to hone their skills in the landscape and greenhouse/nursery field while working in commercial and residential landscapes greenhouse and growing operations. Projects ranged from maintenance and plant installation, to hardscaping and lighting.
The plant production students got their hands into growing and selling a wide range of plant material.
"One of the best parts of this experience is what they bring back to the classroom after their experience this summer. They all have had such diverse experiences that it only heightens the further learning they get in the classroom," said Carl Bower, horticulture instructor and internship coordinator. |

Landscape Alumni Honored |

Two landscape/nursery technology classmates, who established their own business following graduation, were honored with Alumni Achievement Awards during 2011 commencement ceremonies at Penn College.
Justin H. Bentz and Travis M. Breininger operate Nature's Accents Landscape Services Inc., Hamburg, which they established after earning their associate degrees in 2001. They provide landscape design, hardscape installation and property maintenance to commercial and residential properties in Berks, Schuylkill and surrounding counties.
In 2010, Bentz and Breininger volunteered their services for an episode of the Emmy award- winning TV program "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Nature's Accents was the staging site for hundreds of plants used in a makeover. The firm partnered with others from Pennsylvania to complete the project's landscaping in 24 hours.
