Alternative Credit & Advanced Placement
Visit the College Alternative Credit FAQ Web page for general requirements and procedures about alternative credit at Penn College.
Alternative Credit
Students wishing to “test out” of a 100- or 200-level course must send a request in writing to the dean of the School of Natural Resources Management. Include the course listing and the reason for the request. Also include any background information such as copies of certifications, assessments, workshops attended, etc.
The administration and faculty will review the request and determine whether credit for life experience can be awarded or if the student is eligible to take an examination for credit.
If an exam is to be given, the student will provide the school office with proof of payment of the $50 evaluation fee (paid at Student Accounts Office). The exam will be scheduled prior to the end of the third week of classes. The $50 evaluation fee is also applicable for credit for life experience. The school office will initiate appropriate paperwork to attach credits to the students profile.
Advanced Placement
Upon receipt of high school transcripts, the Admissions Office will identify and notify applicants who are candidates for advanced placement. The Admissions Office will mail a letter and competency assessment form to the high school/AVTS and a letter to the applicant.
The completed competency assessment form will be evaluated by the School of Natural Resources Management to determine the likelihood of advanced placement or alternative credits via "testing out." Applicants who receive advanced placement and those who do not qualify are notified by Admissions.
Approved credit will be added to the student’s transcript upon completion of 12 credits.
Competency Assessment Credit in Ornamental Horticulture (OD, OR, OH) and Forest Technology (FR) is determined by program faculty upon review of the vocational school competency assessment.
There is no charge for competency assessment.
Questions concerning competency assessment should be directed to the Admissions Office at (800) 367-9222 or admissions@pct.edu.
