Mathematics Course Selection FAQs
Q: Must I take all the mathematics courses listed as requirements for my major?
A: You must satisfy all the mathematics requirements for your major; however, some higher-level courses may satisfy lower level requirements. Specifically, MTH190, MTH230, MTH240, MTH242, and MTH 340 will satisfy requirements for the sequence MTH180/182 or the sequence MTH 124/125. (Please note that in the MTH180 and MTH182 sequence, neither course may substitute for the other. The same is true for the MTH124/125 sequence.)
NOTE: MTH180 or MTH182 will satisfy either MTH124 or MTH125 in a 3-credit for 3-credit exchange. MTH180 will not satisfy both MTH124 and MTH125. Only MTH190, 230, 240, 242 and 340 would satisfy the sequence of both MTH124 and MTH125 or both MTH180 and MTH182. MTH180 can only substitute for either MTH124 or MTH125, but not both. Likewise, MTH182 can only substitute for either MTH124 or MTH125, but not both.
If your placement allows you to take a higher-level course, you may save time and money by taking one higher-level course as a substitute for lower-level courses. A higher-level course may also give you an advantage should you ever wish to transfer or to earn a higher degree. Talk to your adviser and contact the Mathematics Department for advice.
Q: Can I "test out" of my mathematics requirements?
A: Placement testing at Pennsylvania College of Technology places you into courses, not out of them. You must earn the required mathematics credits as dictated by your choice of major. The only ways to earn the credits are to succeed in the courses, to obtain transfer credit from another institution, to obtain AP credit or CLEP test credit, or to earn Credit-by-Exam.
- For information about the Mathematics department Credit-by-Exam process, please view the Credit-by-Exam page.
- For information about earning AP or CLEP credit, please view the AP/CLEP Credit page.
- For information about earning alternate credit, please visit the Pennsylvania College of Technology Advisement Center.
Always contact the mathematics department before taking a mathematics course at another institution if you hope to transfer the credit to Pennsylvania College of Technology. A transferred course will only satisfy the mathematics requirements for your major if the transfer course is an approved equivalent for the required course.
