Overview
If you are attempting to earn credit by examination for ENL 111 (English Composition I), you must demonstrate competency in the skills listed in the ENL 111 syllabus—including library and research skills. The English faculty, with the support of other College faculty, include those skills in ENL 111 because of their importance in a student’s college experience. Since you wish to bypass ENL 111, you will not have the benefit of instruction in library and research skills during classroom time.
This independent study unit is designed to provide that unit of instruction in a manner that permits you to complete the requirements within a short period of time and at times best suited to your schedule.
Goals
In this unit you will learn ways to plan and complete a research paper. You will also become familiar with the College library, and you will learn efficient ways to find materials you need. You will apply what you learn by completing brief assignments.
Topics
- Orientation to the Library
- Finding and Narrowing a Research Paper Topic
- Locating and Listing Available Research Sources
- Integrating Source Information into Research Sources
- Avoiding Plagiarism
Objectives
Upon completion of this unit you should be able to:
- Use the library efficiently as a result of your understanding the organization of basic library collections: circulation, reference, reserve, periodicals, and vertical files.
- Identify and limit an appropriate topic for the research paper.
- Organize your research work.
- Identify author, title, and subject cards in the card catalog and interpret publication data given on catalog cards.
- Interpret entries in indexes such as the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature and use information gained to locate specific periodical articles.
- Describe the types of plagiarism and use appropriate documentation to avoid each type.
Procedures
Work at your convenience and at your own pace to gain the information necessary to complete this study unit's objectives.
Step 1 – Study a reliable source for information about research and documentation such as a college English handbook, or consult A Basic Guide for Producing the Research Papers or the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed., both of which are available at Madigan Library.
Step 2 – No later than November 16, 2009, go to the Penn College Library and talk with Marilyn Bodnar, Instructional Services Librarian, (LIB137, behind the reference desk in Madigan Library) to arrange access to the computer-based library tutorial. You will then have until noon, November 19, 2009, to complete this program that has been designed to improve your library research skills.
Step 3 – Take the credit-by-examination test on Monday, November 23, 2009, or Tuesday, November 24, 2009, in the College Testing Center, ACC 133. You may begin the test anytime between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. You will have three hours to complete the test. Bring your student ID with you.
