About the Human Services A.A.S. and B.S. Degrees

The Occupational Outlook Handbook notes:

"Opportunities for social and human services assistants are expected to be excellent, particularly for applicants with appropriate post-secondary education. The number of social and human service assistants is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations between 2002 and 2012 — ranking among the most rapidly growing occupations."

Pennsylvania College of Technology offers two degrees in human services.

Human Services (HS) A.A.S. Degree

We train students to provide general helping, supportive and preventive services for people with emotional, developmental, social, or physical problems. Students develop skills in counseling, crisis intervention, group work, and case management. Students apply these general skills in analyzing specific types of agencies and through internships in the field.

Applied Human Services (BHS) B.S. Degree

This degree provides students with a solid background in the general theories and principles of assessing human needs and responding to those needs in the least restrictive environment.

Human services students at Penn College presented the second Assistive Technology Expo on Friday in the Field House. The expo featured a broad range of services and equipment to assist individuals with disabilities. The displays focused on mobility, recreation, communication, tracking systems, home accessibility and education. The five student organizers are enrolled in a course called Technology and Human Services, taught by Larue R. Reese, assistant professor of human services and social sciences.

Penn College will continue its “In Perfect Harmony: The Concert Series in The Gallery at Penn College” with a performance by Key of V on May 5. Key of V, which comprises sibling duo Valerie A. LaCerra (guitar, lead vocals) and Erin M. LaCerra (viola, second vocals), will rock the gallery in a performance of their self-described “strange folk” music from 8-9:30 p.m.

January 2008

A recent fundraiser by Penn College students generated nearly $3,300 for some of the world’s working poor. The funds were raised by students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in applied human services who hosted a sale of fair-trade handmade crafts on campus in November, through an organization called Ten Thousand Villages.

A colorful parade of animals adorns basketry Musical instruments among handcrafted items Unique items fill the sale tables Students in Penn College's human services major held their annual Ten Thousand Villages sale this week in the CC lobby. All proceeds from the sale, conducted Thursday and Friday, go to the crafters of Ten Thousand Villages, a fair-trade organization working with underdeveloped countries.
