Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What prior welding training is needed before enrolling in the program?

No prior training is required. Our program is designed to take an individual from learning the basics to advanced welding techniques in a two-year period.

Why do I need two years of welding training?

In today's industry an individual needs to be well versed in the major welding technologies. Our welding program gives the individual greater latitude in the field of welding due to the individualized hands-on instruction you will receive.

How do I get advanced placement for coursework from a vo-tech or high school welding program?

After you are accepted to Penn College, you will be scheduled for placement testing. When you come to the College for testing, ask in the Admissions Office to have a Competency Assessment Form sent to your vo-tech/high school instructor for completion. The assessment form will then be reviewed by department faculty and a determination made as to what, if any, advanced placement credit is awarded.

How do I get life experience credit for on-the-job work?

If you have performed welding in the workplace, you may be able to get life experience credit. Ask your adviser, an instructor, or stop by the school office for the necessary form and instructions. This form is to be completed by your supervisor and certifies the type and length of job experience. After we review your application, you may be asked to meet with the course instructor for an interview, written test, or a hands-on test before being granted credit. There is a fee charged for each course for which you apply for credit, whether or not your experience is approved as a substitute.

What types of employment will a student be able to pursue after completion of the welding programs?

Depending on your choice of program, you could pursue employment in areas ranging from a structural welder or welding technician to an assistant to a welding engineer. Graduates have found jobs in research, inspection, consulting, management, construction, or power generation.

What tools do I need to supply for my personal use?

You are required to have your own personal equipment. A listing of tools is provided on the Tool List page. Instructors will help identify what tools are needed during the first day of class.
