Other Civil Engineering & Surveying Technology Information
What is the difference between engineering and engineering technology?
Engineering technology deals with the same topics as engineering, but focuses on application rather than theory. Mathematics and basic sciences, as well as hands-on, technical courses, are taught with more emphasis on applications and less on theory.
Graduates who earn the Civil Engineering Technology bachelor’s degree and wish to continue their studies at the graduate level may be required to take additional coursework at some colleges and universities to transition to the higher levels of mathematics and basic sciences required for research and advanced study.
Licensing Possibilities
National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Certification Exams
Civil Technology A.A.S. graduates qualify to take the certification exams for certified technician in the general knowledge category upon graduation, and with approved additional work experience can take exams to become certified in a variety of work areas.
Civil Engineering Technology B.S. graduates can become NICET certified as engineering technologists; however, most graduates take the exams to become licensed professional engineers.
Pennsylvania Professional Engineer (PE) Licensure
Civil Engineering Technology B.S. students qualify to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam — the first of two exams required for licensure in Pennsylvania — after achieving Junior class standing; however, it is recommended that the FE exam be taken during the Senior year.
The second exam can only be taken after successfully completing the FE exam and gaining further work experience under the guidance of a licensed PE as stipulated by the registration law.
Pennsylvania Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) Licensure
Surveying Technology A.A.S. graduates qualify to take the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam — the first of three exams required for licensure in Pennsylvania. In addition, Civil Engineering Technology B.S. graduates may qualify to take the Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam with additional coursework. Current B.S. students will need to work with their academic advisor to plan accordingly.
The second and third exam can only be taken after successfully completing the FS exam and gaining further work experience under the guidance of a licensed PLS as stipulated by the registration law.
