Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: What are the safety and dress code restrictions?
A: Do not wear loose fitting clothing that may get caught in a machine; short sleeves or tightly rolled up sleeves are recommended. Long hair should be pulled back and securely fastened. Shop aprons should be worn to reduce the wear and tear on clothing.
Safety equipment is available from the tool room (such as insulated gloves for working in the furnace area) and should be used. NO HORSEPLAY will be tolerated. Outside of regular class times, students may only work in the shop with prior approval of an instructor who is present in the laboratory area.

The second way is to have your primary machine shop teacher complete an evaluation form. After you are accepted to Penn College, you will be scheduled for placement testing. When you come to the College for testing, ask for this form in the either the Admissions Office or the School of Industrial and Engineering Technologies Office. It will be sent to your instructor for completion.
Q: How do I get life experience credit for on-the-job work?
A: If you have worked in a machine shop or manufacturing plant, you may be able to get life experience credit. Ask your adviser, an instructor, or stop by the school office for the necessary form. This form is to be completed by your supervisor and certifies the type and length of job experience. After we review your application, you may be asked to meet with the course instructor for an interview, written test, or a hands-on test before being granted credit. There is a fee charged for each course that you apply for credit, whether or not your experience is approved as a substitute.
Q: What specialized tools are needed for the program?
A: To minimize the time spent waiting in line to obtain or return the basic tools to the room, it is recommended that students purchase their own tools. A listing of recommended tools is provided on the Tool List page. Instructors will help identify what tools are needed during the first day of class.
