How are selections for the major determined?

All students are enrolled as Pre-Surgical technology students. Academic performance in the first (fall) semester will determine final acceptance into the Surgical Technology major. Minimum academic requirements include 2.0 math/science and graduation grade point averages (GPAs). The math/science GPA is calculated based upon grades in MTH 124, MTH 125, MTH 151, MTH 153, MTH 160, BIO 115, BIO 125, and BIO 201. The graduation GPA includes grades earned in the math/science courses above, as well as the other required courses. Admission is limited to the top 18 students. The School of Health Sciences reserves the right to institute an admission ranking system as deemed necessary to maintain small class sizes in the major.

Can I transfer into the Surgical Technology program?

You can transfer into Pre-Surgical Technology and be considered for acceptance into the major. Each year, the program has accepted students who transferred from other Penn College majors as well as from other colleges. Transfer students are encouraged to meet with the program director to discuss transfer possibilities.

When are the acceptance decisions made?

Acceptance decisions are made at the end of the Fall semester.

How long can I remain in the Pre-Surgical Technology major?

Students are limited to 24 attempted credits (taken at Penn College, excluding developmental courses) in a pre-health major. Following the December selection, students who have 24 attempted credits or more, and are not selected for acceptance into the major, are required to meet with the program director to discuss viable education options.
