Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long is the Surgical Technology program?
A: Students complete the curriculum sequence in six semesters over two years (year-round participation). The first semester consists of prerequisites. The second semester begins the core surgical technology courses. [Curriculum]
Q: How are selections for the major determined?
A: All students are initially accepted as pre-surgical technology students. Academic performance in the first semester (fall) will determine final acceptance into the Surgical Technology major. Minimum academic requirements include a 2.0 math/science and graduation GPAs. The math/science GPA is calculated by using the courses MTH 124, MTH 125, MTH 151, MTH 153, MTH 160, BIO 115, BIO 125, and BIO 201. The graduation GPA includes the math/science courses above, as well as the other courses required by the Surgical Technology major. Admission is currently limited to the top 18 students. The School of Health Sciences reserves the right to institute a selective admission point system as deemed necessary to maintain small class sizes in the major.
Q: Can I transfer into the Surgical Technology program?
A: Yes, as a pre-surgical technology student. Each year, the program has accepted students who have transferred from other pre-health majors within the School as well as from other colleges. Transfer students are encouraged to meet with the Program Director to discuss transfer possibilities.
Q: When are the admission decisions made?
A: Admissions decisions are made at the end of the Fall semester.
Q: Who should I contact if I need additional information?
A: Further questions concerning surgical technology as a profession, the Surgical Technology program, or the admissions process can be directed to the director of Surgical Technology. Any questions concerning a student’s general application should be directed to the Admission’s Office.
