Graduates of Pennsylvania College of Technology's Physical Fitness Specialist program will understand basic physiological responses to exercise. They will be able to demonstrate safe, effective, and fundamentally sound techniques of fitness assessment and exercise prescription.
The Physical Fitness Specialist associate's degree prepares students to enter the fitness employment market by providing an excellent combination of exercise theory, practical knowledge, and hands-on experience.
The program emphasizes assessment and exercise prescription in the following areas:
- Body composition and weight management
- Nutrition
- Cardio respiratory fitness/group fitness
- Muscular strength and endurance
- Flexibility
- Functional and integrated movement
The faculty have extensive experience in physical fitness programs and constantly strive to keep abreast of new training programs and techniques.
YMCA Offers Opportunity to Physical Fitness Specialist Majors

Penn College students enrolled in the physical fitness specialist major were given the opportunity to experience aquatic-exercise classes, thanks to the Williamsport YMCA. The physical fitness specialist major recently revised its curriculum, and the 25 second-semester students who traveled to the YMCA on April 7 are the first to take a required course called group fitness leader training, which helps prepare them to become instructors in a variety of group-exercise formats, including aerobics, muscle conditioning and stretching. Penn College’s Physical Fitness Specialist Majors Earn Recognition

Penn College’s fitness and lifetime sports program recently earned recognition by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Acceptance into the NSCA’s Education Recognition Program means the college’s educational programs – a bachelor’s degree in applied health studies: physical fitness specialist concentration and an associate degree in physical fitness specialist – have met and continue to meet educational guidelines recommended by the NSCA. Students Sit for Certification Exam on Campus

Nine fourth-semester students in the physical fitness specialist major recently sat for the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s Certified Personal Trainer exam, which was conducted on campus in April. Designed for professionals who work one-on-one with their clients in a variety of environments, it is one of the top certifications to achieve in the field of fitness management and personal training. The exam thoroughly tests the knowledge and skills that are necessary to successfully train active and sedentary physically healthy individuals, as well as the elderly and obese.
Fitness Elective Credit Available for Eligible Veterans

Penn College students who have been in the military may now receive a fitness elective credit for their basic training, provided the training has taken place within the past 10 years. Students with military service would need to submit a transcript to the Admissions Office from the American Council on Education stating that the training has been evaluated. If additional credit for military experience is requested, the request will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Such requests should be directed to the department head for fitness and lifetime sports or the dean of the School of Health Sciences. Continue to story
