The Pennsylvania College of Technology Foundation and the School of Hospitality combined efforts recently to offer a reception honoring those who have established scholarships at the college, at the same time providing a unique capstone project for students in the baking and pastry arts major.

Judges have announced winners for the recent CalJava International student cake contest at Penn College. Kristan N. Kessler, of Elysburg, who earned an associate degree in baking and pastry arts May 17 and is continuing her education toward a degree in hospitality management at the college, was named the grand-prize winner of the CalJava Wedding Cake Contest, earning an all-expense paid trip to California to attend a hands-on course at the CalJava International School of Cake Decorating and Sugarcrafts.

Cakes represent wedding gift bags. Hand-made bride and groom. The college community had the opportunity Monday and Tuesday to view entries in the third Cal-Java Wedding Cake Contest, conceived by renowned cake decorator (and Cal-Java International owner) Daniel Budiman for Penn College students. Eight students, enrolled in an advanced cake-decorating course, designed wedding cakes based on wedding gift bags. Visitors to Penn's Inn could cast their cash vote for the "People's Choice" Award, proceeds from which will be given to Williamsport YWCA’s Liberty House, which provides rooms for homeless women (and women with children) and programs to assist them in becoming self-sufficient. Also on display were "seasonal" cakes by the Cakes and Decorations 1 class, blown-sugar sea life, and chocolate buildings.

Penn College students will compete in the third annual “CalJava Wedding Cake Contest,” scheduled for May 5 on the college’s main campus in Williamsport. The contest was conceived – and is sponsored – by Daniel Budiman, CEO of CalJava International. Budiman has twice visited the college to offer demonstrations to students, which led him to establish the contest to encourage baking and pastry arts students to push their talents to the next level in artistic cake decorating.

Baking students to sell breads, desserts Le Jeune Chef Restaurant will host a sale of fresh, student-produced baked goods Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-4 p.m. (or while supplies last). Prices for the products, which are made by baking and pastry arts students during introductory skills labs, range from $1 to $5. The variety of breads and desserts will change weekly during the semester, based on skills being taught in class. Products will be sold near the back of the restaurant; shoppers may enter through the Susquehanna Room lobby. Preordering is not available.
