About the Building Science and Sustainable Design Programs
Sustainability has become a major topic in our world today. Demand for sustainable buildings has been increasing exponentially and the marketplace foresees a continuation of this trend. Graduates of our Building Science and Sustainable Design majors will have highly marketable skills and will contribute to a healthier environment.
In order to accommodate the varied backgrounds of our students, three versions of the Building Science and Sustainable Design Bachelor of Science degree are offered. The three versions differ only in the makeup of the first two years of coursework; the final two years of all three concentrations are identical.
Building Science and Sustainable Design: Architectural Technology Concentration (BSD) [View BSD curriculum]
The BSD program marries the study of sustainability issues with a broad based background in architectural technology. This four-year degree combines coursework from our two-year Architectural Technology degree with an additional two years of sustainable design studies.
An additional benefit of the BSD degree is that it may provide interested graduates with a path toward registration as an architect. Graduates could continue their schooling after completion of the BSD program by enrolling in an NAAB accredited Master of Architecture program. An NAAB-accredited professional architecture degree is one of the requirements to become a registered architect in most states. The accredited graduate-level programs generally take from two to three and a half years.
Building Science and Sustainable Design: Building Construction Technology Concentration (BSC) [View BSC curriculum]
The BSC program combines a background in building construction technology with a specialization in sustainability. It consists of two years of core construction coursework augmented with two additional years of building science and sustainability. This program is intended for students who wish to pursue careers as sustainability oriented contractors and construction professionals.
Building Science and Sustainable Design (BST) [View BST curriculum]
The BST program is designed as a 2+2 bachelor’s degree program for graduates from other programs or colleges. In addition to Architectural Technology (AT) and Building Construction Technology (CB), students from the Masonry (MN), Electrical Technology (EL), and Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning (HV/HP) programs are encouraged to enroll. Graduates from other non-construction related areas including Information Technology and Business Management are also welcome. Students who have not previously taken coursework in building materials and environmental systems (mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems) will be required to do so in order to meet the pre-requisite requirements of BST program courses.
