Building Science and Sustainable Design: Architectural Technology Concentration
Bachelor of Science Degree (B.S.)

The Bachelor of Science degree in Building Science and Sustainable Design promotes a healthier, more energy efficient way to build which reduces negative environmental impacts and slows the depletion of natural resources. Students study sustainable approaches to materials, construction, site design, building design, and the generation of energy. In addition, students receive training in building science fundamentals related to the measurement of building performance. Students also learn skills vital to historic preservation and the renovation and re-use of existing buildings. Graduates should be equipped with the knowledge to design and/or construct buildings that make positive contributions to their communities. Students may choose to complete the major with an emphasis in Architectural Technology or Building Construction Technology. In addition, other applied technology degrees in areas such as HVAC, Electrical Technology, Business Management, and Information Technology will be considered for the directed elective requirements of the transfer major. After completing the first four semesters, students may petition to graduate with the appropriate A.A.S. degree where applicable.

Graduates have a diverse set of skills and abilities that could prepare them for "green" careers focused on energy, renewable energy, and the environment. Read more...

CAD Software Links and Computer Specifications

The following is a list of information that will be helpful for Architectural Technology and Building Science and Sustainable Design students interested in purchasing their own computers. Please note that purchasing a computer and software is optional. Students in our programs are not required to purchase their own computers. Many of our classrooms are equipped with computers and we have open computer labs most evenings and during the weekend.

Students in the Architectural Technology and Building Science and Sustainable Design majors use the following programs:

  • Autodesk AutoCAD®
  • Autodesk Revit®
  • Trimble Sketchup®
  • Adobe Photoshop®

Many of the software products developed by Autodesk are free to our students if they enroll in the Autodesk® student community. If students wish to purchase their own computers, we suggest they purchase one capable of running Revit.
