Advanced Placement & Alternative Credit
Advanced Placement
New students – select the appropriate department link below for information regarding advanced placement:
Architectural Technology
If you are a new Architectural Technology or Building Science & Sustainable Design: Architectural Technology Concentration (BSD) student, you will be notified of advanced placement testing prior to the start of the fall semester. Advanced placement credit may be granted for:
ACH 135 Advanced Placement Requirements
You must take and pass the CAD placement exam, which includes a CAD drawing project relating to these courses.
ACH 128 Advanced Placement Requirements
You must submit a portfolio of CAD-generated house plans demonstrating thorough knowledge of the basic competencies covered in the course. For a complete list of these competencies, request a copy of the course syllabus from the school office. Architecture faculty will evaluate your portfolio during the first eight weeks of the fall semester to determine if advanced placement credit should be given.
Construction Technology
Newly enrolled students with completed course work from a career and technical center are encouraged to contact the Admissions Office to ensure that a competency assessment form is sent to their instructor. If the instructor's assessment indicates that the student has acquired the necessary foundational skills with an outstanding rating, the student will be given the opportunity to advance placement test in the appropriate areas.
Typical courses for which students may advance placement test:
- BCT 103 (Construction Hand and Power Tools)
- BCT 107 (Print Reading and Architectural Drafting
- BCT 109 (Framing Principles)
- BCT 110 (Site Preparation and Layout)
Masonry students may advance placement test for credit in:
Entering students are not assessed a fee for taking the advanced placement exams.
Electrical Technology
Newly enrolled students with completed course work from a career and technical center are encouraged to contact the Admissions Office to ensure that a competency assessment form is sent to their instructor. If the instructor's assessment indicates that the student has acquired the necessary foundational skills with an outstanding rating, the student may qualify for advanced placement credit. Courses for which advanced placement credit may be given include:
- ELT 111 (Direct Current Fundamentals)
- ELT 116 (Construction Lab I – Residential)
- ELT 117 (Applied Direct Current Fundamentals)
In some cases, the student may be given the opportunity to take an advanced placement exam to determine their eligibility for advanced placement credit.
Entering students are not assessed a fee for taking the advanced placement exams.
HVAC Technology
Newly enrolled students with completed course work from a career and technical center are encouraged to contact the Admissions Office to ensure that a competency assessment form is sent to their instructor. If the instructor's assessment indicates that the student has acquired the necessary foundational skills with an outstanding rating, the student may qualify for advanced placement credit. In some cases, the student may be given the opportunity to take an advanced placement exam to determine their eligibility for advanced placement credit.

Currently enrolled students – contact the School of Construction & Design Technologies to arrange to test out of specific courses. You must contact the instructor of the specific course(s) you wish to challenge.
Credit for Work/Life Experience
Contact the School of Construction and Design Technologies for the necessary application. Along with the completed application, you must submit:
- a notarized letter from your employer which outlines your job description, your daily activities, the number of hours you worked, and a statement indicating to what extent you have mastered the skills/competencies described in the course description (for the course for which you wish to receive credit);
- portfolio documentation (optional);
- A $50 non-refundable fee.
A faculty committee will review all documentation and render a decision.
Credit for Internship Experience
You may elect to take courses as a co-op experience during both the school year and during the summer. Arrange your co-op (internship) with the School of Construction and Design Technologies' internship coordinator and the secretary to the assistant dean.
Credit will be awarded based on periodic employer reports concerning your progress. Appointed faculty will also schedule routine visits to your internship location.
