The competency credential/minor in Financial Planning is designed to provide a broad background in financial planning for those students who desire to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner. Students are awarded a certificate of participation after completing the six required courses for the program. Students completing the competency credential, or minor, in Financial Planning are eligible to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination. Prior to certification, candidates also must provide evidence of financial planning work related experience, sign an affidavit disclosing prior business conduct, and agree to adhere to CFP Board's Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility. CFP Board, a nonprofit regulatory organization, is devoted to educating the public about the benefits of financial planning.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics median annual wage for personal financial advisors was $67,520 in May 2012. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $32,280, and the top 10 percent earned more than $187,200. Personal financial advisors who work for financial services firms are often paid a salary plus bonuses. Bonuses are not included in the wage data here.
