Special Purpose Labs
The Department of Information Technology is supported by four special purpose computing laboratory classrooms and wireless access throughout the ATHS east wing. The labs are located in rooms E229, E230, E232, and E236. In association with the specialty labs, our lab coordinator maintains a Linux-based Apache Web Server at http://ist.pct.edu, a .NET Server at http://helix.pct.edu, an Oracle Database Server and a Sun Solaris Server.
Networking Lab
Located in ATHS E230, this lab is equipped with 22 networked computers using up-to-date networking technology and allows the ability to reconfigure the lab and the network to support our networking curricula.
The lab utilizes removable hard drives to allow for ultimate flexibility. Students may sign out a hard drive for a computer, much like borrowing a book from a library. Students can learn about the intricacies of installing and maintaining various operating system and software while remaining isolated from other students’ work, the Internet, and/or the College network. The computers are linked via switches and routers rack-mounted in the back of the lab. This lab is equipped to accommodate wireless and mobile computing instruction as well.
IT Security Lab
Located in ATHS E229, this lab houses 9 workstations with removable hard drives and is designed for group work and experimentation to support our innovative security curriculum. Students working in this lab can gain practical and valuable hands-on experience with biometric, forensic, cryptographic, and other contemporary IT security hardware and software while remaining isolated from the College’s network. Some security issues include virus software behavior, network and computer attacks, and spyware effects.
Sun Solaris Lab
Located in ATHS E232, this lab is equipped with 25 Sun Blade workstations that utilize a Sun Fire V440 server. Students working in this lab will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience using Unix/Linux and Sun Solaris operating systems and object-oriented programming languages.
Web and Application Development Lab
Located in ATHS E236, this lab equips 25 computers with various Web, multimedia, and application development software packages to support our Web and applications programming curriculum. Students utilizing this lab can gain the knowledge and skills necessary to design, build, and maintain professional Web sites.
