Students' and Parents' Rights Relating to Educational Records

At the postsecondary level, parents have no inherent rights to inspect their son's or daughter's educational record. The right to inspect is limited solely to the student. Student records may be released to parents only if at least one of the following conditions has been met:

  • grant access through the Parent/Guest access option on the Student Information System (SIS) by the student.
  • in compliance with a subpoena;
  • by submission of evidence that the parents declared the student as a dependent on their most recent federal income tax form. An institution is not required to disclose information from the student's educational records to any parent of a dependant student.
