Below are samples of various media used to teach concepts in plastics extrusion. Color-enhanced illustrations are an excellent tool for describing detail in a hardware component or for helping the student conceptualize microscopic phenomena. Animations allow the learner to see inside of a machine that was formerly thought of as a "black box" or to understand how a pair of mechanisms work in coordination.

A simulator gives students "hands-on" experience while preserving safety and cost-efficiency and allowing repetition.

For more information about tools for teaching extrusion, contact Dr. Kirk Cantor, associate professor of Plastics and Polymer Technology at Penn College or visit his homepage.

Plastics Extrusion - PREP, the Plastics Resources for Educators Program, is developing visual materials for teaching extrusion of plastics pellets into common plastics products such as plastic bags made on a blown film extruder. Technician-level college classes and hands-on seminars in Penn College's plastics extrusion laboratory provide students and industry employees the opportunity for training on actual and simulated extrusion machines.
Penn College's extrusion laboratory enables associate and bachelor-degree students in the college's ABET accredited plastics and polymer engineering degree programs to gain the practical experience and knowledge that the plastics extrusion industry has requested. The laboratory includes various equipment for testing the material type, density, and strength of material used in extruding plastic.
Senior-level students assist with operating the extrusion machines for seminars for the plastics extrusion industry. Many students help to demonstrate use of the extrusion equipment to produce plastic bags for visitors at the college's biannual open house events.
