Offense Rate Calculation

The offense rate, defined as the number of offenses per 100,000 population, is calculated by dividing the jurisdiction population by 100,000 and then dividing the number of offenses by the resulting number.

Example:

  1. If Penn College population = 4,886 (full-time equivalent for students and employees = FTE)
  2. If trespass incidents for the year = 4
    1. Divide 4,886 by 100,000 = .04886
    2. Divide 4 by .04886 = 81.87
  3. The trespass rate is then 81.87

Note: The number .04886 is divided into the total of each offense to determine the rate of that offense.
