Commonwealth Cabinet Secretary Visits Penn College

Walker toured the Weatherization Training Center along Reach Road – seeing firsthand how the facility has earned its sterling reputation – and discussed the college's leadership role in the Marcellus Shale Education & Training Center and the WEDnetPA Guaranteed Free Training Program. Welcomed by college President Davie Jane Gilmour, the secretary also heard from Larry L. Michael, assistant vice president for workforce development and special projects; John E. Manz and Alison A. Dillon, Pennsylvania Housing Resource Center director and assistant director, respectively; and Tom J. Venditti, statewide director of WEDnetPA.

WTC Spotlighted in U.S. Department of Energy Video

A quarter-century of excellence Penn College's Weatherization Training Center, expanded and modernized last fall in response to heightened American Recovery and Reinvestment Act investment, is the subject of a U.S. Department of Energy video. Taped in April and recently posted online as part of the agency's "Energy Empowers" series, the four-minute segment features WTC staff, alumni and others who benefit from the comprehensive training provided at the Reach Road facility. "My classes here completely prepared me for the job that I have now. Without these classes, I wouldn't be able to have the job that I have now," says alumnus Kirk Gannett, a state Department of Community and Economic Development employee who was among those interviewed. "I'm monitoring agencies. I'm out there looking at what agencies are doing, how they're spending money, and making sure that the work they're doing is up to our Pennsylvania standards."

Weatherization Training Center Catches Energy Department's Eye

Sabin also visited a Combustion Analysis and Retrofit class; met with three alumni (Dawn Moody, Kirk Gennett and Karl Orwig) to get a perspective on their WTC training; and spent time in the field with STEP Inc., a local Weatherization Assistance provider.

DCED Secretary Tours Weatherization Training Center at Penn College

The center has expanded operations in response to the growing demand for service fueled by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The center expects to train up to 1,000 men and women to help low-income households reduce energy consumption and costs in the coming year. The funding boost is expected to provide 940 jobs in Pennsylvania over the next three years for individuals who will weatherize at least 29,700 more housing units, reducing energy usage in the state by the equivalent of 155,000 barrels of oil a year. WTC provides competency-based training courses on site and on location for employees or contractors of community-based organizations who administer mechanical and building-shell retrofits under the assistance program. Weatherization Training Center Expands to Meet Demand

Weatherization Training Center showcased For nearly 25 years, the Weatherization Training Center at Penn College has provided technical education and training to the professionals who implement programs helping low-income households reduce their energy consumption and costs. With an infusion of federal stimulus funds bolstering those efforts in Pennsylvania, the WTC is one of the first such training facilities nationwide to expand its operations in response to the growing demand fueled by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act support. The center held a Grand Opening on Wednesday, showcasing the enhanced facility for invited federal, state and local officials and training partners, who met with staff and toured the 16,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art instructional space on Reach Road in Williamsport. The Open House was featured in WNEP-TV and WBRE-TV newscasts Wednesday evening.

Weatherization Training Center Becomes BPI Affiliate

The Weatherization Training Center at Penn College announces its affiliation with the Building Performance Institute. As a BPI affiliate, WTC will be aligned with a nationally recognized credentialing process and provide an enhanced career path for Pennsylvania Weatherization Assistance Program field staff and private-sector building-performance contractors. Degree-seeking students in the construction design programs at Penn College may also benefit by pursuing BPI certifications offered through WTC.

Funding Renewed for Weatherization Training Center

With the arrival of another home-heating season, federal funding has been renewed for an acknowledged statewide leader in training thousands of technicians to improve the energy efficiency, health, safety and comfort of their clients’ homes and businesses. The Weatherization Training Center, part of the Pennsylvania Housing Resource Center based at Penn College, was granted $320,000 for the current academic year. The money, which has been allocated in varying amounts every year since the training center’s creation in 1985, comes from the U.S. Department of Energy and is administered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development.

College Weatherization Pro Goes High-Tech to Show Heat Loss

College weatherization expert 'on the air' Using an infrared thermal imaging camera, an expert from Penn College's Weatherization Training Center was featured in an energy-efficiency piece that aired during Newswatch 16's 7 p.m. newscast Tuesday. "Forty percent of your bill is actually in air loss, not in insulation," Larry D. Armanda told WNEP's Norm Jones. "So about 40 cents of every dollar spent in heating is actually going out of your house in air flow. So we can find those air-flow problems or where that air is leaking out of the house and cap that. You've saved a great deal of money."

Funding Renewed for Weatherization Training Center at Penn College

An initiative that has trained weatherization agencies and other technicians for more than two decades has been awarded federal funding to continue its timely mission of reduced energy consumption, health, safety and comfort for residential and commercial clients alike. The Weatherization Training Center, part of the Pennsylvania Housing Resource Center based at Penn College, was granted $316,000 for the current academic year. The money, which has been annually renewed in varying amounts since WTC’s creation in 1985, comes from the U.S. Department of Energy and is administered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development.
