Pennsylvania College of Technology students, faculty member attend 20th anniversary POWER-GEN International Convention in Orlando, Fla. Three Pennsylvania College of Technology students and an instructor of diesel technology technology/heavy construction equipment recently traveled to Florida to attend a power-generation convention and Electrical Generating Systems Association School.

School of Natural Resources Management faculty member Paul A. Zenga accompanied students Benjamin G. Anderson, of Kane, and Matthew T. Churico, electrical power generation technology majors; and Joshua E. Henne, enrolled in the heavy construction equipment technology: technician emphasis major.

All attended the 20th anniversary POWER-GEN International Convention on Dec. 2 at Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center, where companies from all over the world gathered to present, provide details regarding, and possibly sell their products.

Students had the whole day to network with industry professionals, explore vendor booths and seek job opportunities. Some of the major companies that attended the event included Caterpillar, GE Energy, Hitachi, Eaton, Doosan, Alstom and Magnum Products.

Like the convention itself, the EGSA School – held Dec. 3-5 – attracted a diverse crowd of individuals involved with sales, marketing, education, mechanics, engineering, etc. Through the three-day course, the students learned about basic electricity, prime movers, alternators/generators, voltage regulators, governors, transfer switches, basic generators, and specifications and bid documents. At the end of the course, each attendee received a certificate of completion for the training.

“The school was full of excellent knowledge that the students can use in the near future,” said Zenga, who also is an alumnus of the college’s heavy construction equipment technology: technician emphasis major.
