A team of 14 Pennsylvania College of Technology students finished third overall and placed in 12 categories at the recent Mid-Atlantic States Intercollegiate Woodsmen's Meet at Allegany College of Maryland.

During the annual event, which was hosted April 18 on the Cumberland, Md., campus, Penn College students Katherine L. Huddleson, Sheffield, and Kelly J. Tome, Muncy, took first place in the women’s crosscut saw competition. The college’s other first-place award went to Derek J. Peterson, Corry, who won the throw-bag competition.

Second-place winners and their events were: Matthew A. Daubert, Williamsport, archery; Michael C. Dickert, Newtown, and Brian A. Tomassacci, Shickshinny, pole fell; Huddleson, women’s chainsaw; Brent J. Beamer, Montoursville; Dickert and Thomas D. Miller, Wellsboro, water boil; and Timothy A. Fegely, Allentown, throw bag.

Bringing home third-place honors were Huddleson, Tomassacci, Michael C. Frantz, Loganton, and Coy R. Weller, Middleburg, log roll; Dustin L. Rhoades, Milroy, men’s ax throw; and Tome, women’s ax throw.

In a separate competition held by Stihl Timbersports – encompassing underhand chop, one-man saw buck, chainsaw and vertical chop – Peterson placed fourth.

Also competing were James D. Aumiller III, Milroy, and Gregory M. Christina, Summerhill.

All of the students are forest technology majors in the college’s School of Natural Resources Management except Miller, working toward a bachelor’s degree in technology management, and Aumiller, a surveying technology major.

Penn College finished behind Penn State Mont Alto and Haywood Community College, Clyde, N.C., in the overall standings. The other competitors were host Allegany and Montgomery Community College, Troy, N.C.

The students were accompanied by Dennis F. Ringling, forestry professor, and Jack E. Fisher, lab assistant for forest technology at the college’s Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood.
