Penn College Grads, Students Among SkillsUSA Medalists

Two new Penn College alumni, a returning student and a recent high school graduate who simultaneously enrolled in college courses last year were among medalists at the 44th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference held June 23-28 in Kansas City, Mo.

Check-in was held in Penn’s Inn (CC, second floor) for the approximately 125 students and their guests, part of the summerlong orientation process at Penn College.
Hundreds of Filers Benefit From Students’ Free Tax Assistance

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, in which Penn College students and the Salvation Army partnered to aid hundreds of lower-income individuals and families in preparing their returns, helped local residents receive nearly $240,000 in total refunds during the just-concluded 2007 tax year.
Students’ Project Enriches Lives of Nursing-Home Residents

Two construction students at Penn College have collaborated on a “dream” project that will help local nursing-home residents better exercise their green thumbs. Bradley D. Martin, a construction carpentry major from Granville Summit, and Jacob D. Carlson, a cabinetmaking and millwork student from West Chester, recently built three planter boxes and – accompanied by Marc E. Bridgens, assistant dean of construction and design technologies – delivered them to the Valley View Nursing Center near Montoursville.
Le Jeune Chef Offers New Menu Format for Summer

This summer, guests dining at Le Jeune Chef Restaurant – operated by the School of Hospitality at Penn College – will have the opportunity to enjoy a new menu concept for dinner service Wednesday through Saturday nights. An à la carte format was put in place May 28 that will allow guests more flexibility for their dining pleasure. Le Jeune Chef has for the last several years offered a “prixe fixe” dinner menu that included an appetizer, soup, salad, fish course and intermezzo, choice of four entrées, a cheese course, and choice of desserts. The new menu features varied appetizers, soups, salads and entrée selections that can be served alone or in many combinations to accommodate those who want a more traditional meal and those who prefer a shorter experience.
Students Create Video Projects for Local Nonprofits

Students in Penn College’s mass media communication major completed video projects for local nonprofit organizations during the Spring 2008 semester. The students, enrolled in the Advanced Digital Media Production course, produced both “long-form” client advocacy pieces, which ranged in length between seven and 20 minutes, and multiple 30-second public-service announcements, all in about 14 weeks. According to Bruce E. Huffman, instructor of media arts and video production, the project helps students understand the strengths and challenges of working in a production team, working with and being responsible to a client, and working within deadlines.

Culinary Arts Students Chosen for Salute to Excellence Tribute

Two Penn College students were selected to attend the National Restaurant Association’s Salute to Excellence, held in Chicago on May 17. Erin E. Brown, of Lock Haven, and Mark R. Capellazzi, of Rochester, N.Y., were chosen to attend, following a rigorous selection process by faculty and staff in the college’s School of Hospitality.
Winners Named in CalJava-Sponsored Cake Contest

Judges have announced winners for the recent CalJava International student cake contest at Penn College. Kristan N. Kessler, of Elysburg, who earned an associate degree in baking and pastry arts May 17 and is continuing her education toward a degree in hospitality management at the college, was named the grand-prize winner of the CalJava Wedding Cake Contest, earning an all-expense paid trip to California to attend a hands-on course at the CalJava International School of Cake Decorating and Sugarcrafts.
