'Cat Tales
Baseball
Saturday’s scheduled game was washed out, but the Penn College bats were on fire Sunday in a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Beaver. In the two games, the Wildcats scored 29 runs and allowed 12.
 
“We were on a mission down there. Beaver is our big rival,” said coach Chris Howard. “We came out focused.”
 
Key batters during the twin bill were Devon Liquori (Hawley), who had six hits; Dane Glick (Belleville), who had four hits and a home run; and Pete Saprona (Greentown), who had three hits and drove in five runs in the second game. Mark Shaffer (Hanover) was the winning pitcher in the first game and PJ Horn (Pittsburgh) came on in the fourth inning of the second game, pitching out of a bases-loaded no-out jam without giving up a run. He earned the win in that game.
 

Golf
On a day when Penn College golfer T.C. Reynolds (Muncy) shared medalist honors for the first time since the 2006 season – he didn’t compete last year – the Wildcats tasted defeat for the first time in six seasons. Penn State New Kensington, led by co-medalist Matt Miller’s 77, edged Penn College 317 to 322, snapping the Wildcats’ win streak at 155 matches. Other teams and their scores were Penn State Fayette, 351; Penn State Mont Alto, 355; and Penn State Greater Allegheny, 392. Behind Reynolds for Penn College were Len Nicholas (Hollywood), 80; Doug Wagner (Huntingdon Mills), 81; and Eric Schall (Jersey Shore), 84.
 

Men's Soccer
Penn College outshot Penn State Mont Alto, 34-3, with multiple connections by Steve Lis (Elliottsburg) and Jevin Martin (Northumberland), who each had two goals and one assist. Also contributing to the scoring effort as the Wildcats extended their two-season win streak to 22-0 were Morris Sayon (Upper Darby) and Roberto Barraza (Stroudsburg), who each had a goal and an assist.
 

Women's Soccer
Stepping up at NCAA Division III cross-town rival Lycoming College, the Lady Wildcats suffered their second consecutive loss after opening the season with three wins. Penn College managed just four shots on goal during the match.
 
Erin Oberlin (New Berlin) and Blair Smith (South Williamsport) each scored goals and Bridget Metzger (Montoursville) had two assists as Penn College rebounded to beat Valley Forge Christian College.
 
The Lady Wildcats completed a perfect weekend with a comeback victory over Christendom College on a pair of goals by Hannah McCracken (Williamsport).
 

Team Tennis
In a home match against Penn State York, Shane Burridge (Ephrata), Austin Moran (Mount Joy) and Erica Logan (Montoursville) each won their singles and doubles matches to help lift the Wildcats to their fifth win without a loss.
 
At Penn State Wilkes-Barre, Burridge, Moran and Robert Kemrer (Milton) each won their singles and doubles matches.
 

Women's Volleyball
The Lady Wildcats evened their season record at 4-4 with a three-set win over Penn State Scranton. Sasha Deimler (Middletown) had nine aces on her serves in the victory.
 
In a win over Penn State Hazleton that pushed them above .500 for the season, the Lady Wildcats took three of four games.
 
Against some tough competition at the Pitt-Bradford Tournament, Penn College lost to Mount Aloysius and the host team.
 
“Our matches this weekend (at Pitt-Bradford) were particularly tough,” commented coach Bambi Hawkins. “Although our team won the longest rallies of both matches, the energy was not available to fight hard.
 
“It was great to see that several of our players have a passion for volleyball that led them to travel far and push through the cold symptoms that have invaded the team. Unfortunately, we were also missing two players from our already small roster due to family obligations. To top it off, the lights went out in Pitt-Bradford’s main gym just as our ladies were rallying against Mount Aloysius in the third set. It was quite interesting to watch volleyball by the light of the large windows at one end of the gym,” Hawkins added.
