Penn College Wrestlers Finish Third in National Tournament

Competing Sunday in the Penn State University Athletic Conference/United States Collegiate Athletic Association wrestling championships, Penn College placed third as a team and crowned two individual champions. Freshmen Derek Leiby, of Troy, in the 149-pound weight class, and Logan Gresock, of Wadsworth, Ohio, at 174, claimed titles in the nine-team tournament at Rec Hall in University Park and helped the Wildcats to 108 points and a third-place team finish behind No. 1 Newport News Apprentice School and No. 2 Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) University. Among PSUAC schools, Penn College was at the top with Penn State DuBois second in the conference and fourth overall.

Back-and-Forth Battle Ultimately Goes Students' Way

The students came onto the basketball court looking for an easy win, and that's just how their Monday game against a staff/faculty team began. In a story that took both halves to play out, they hung on for a 62-54 victory in Bardo Gym. Early in the game, intramural assistant Jeremy Bottorf said, the students could not miss (and the staff/faculty team couldn’t buy a basket). Students built a 20-point lead, but staff/faculty battled back as Allen Regan – who led all scorers with 21 – chipped away with 3-pointers. It wasn’t until about three minutes left in the first half, when Regan hit his fourth 3-pointer, that the students realized their single-digit edge. Terribly outrebounded, staff/faculty started boxing out the big men and the pendulum soon swung in their direction. The second half could not have started any better for the staff/faculty team and Wildcat athletic director Scott Kennell, who appeared to be a man on a mission as he scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half. The staff/faculty team went on a 10-2 run to start the half, taking a 33-32 lead. The students fought back and soon the game was a seesaw matchup. Still on a run, the staff/faculty team cashed in on missed free throws and were able to keep pace. Jami Hughes and Mike Hersh had key steals, and Regan, Wyatt Decker and Matthew Strayer ran the fast break perfectly. Angel Stroud, Chet Rogers and Rick Wyland worked hard under the boards, outrebounding the students in the second half. Students regained and increased their lead late in the game as four students scored in double figures. Blake Smith, Emanuel Small and Mohamed Idries each scored 14 points, and Kyle Parkins added 12. Larz Fernandez chipped in with 4 points, and Ryan Hushon and Will Montague each added a bucket. Staff/faculty kept climbing back, helped by a student team that made only two free throws in 13 attempts, but the students claimed a hard-fought win. In addition to Regan and Kennell's totals, Angel Stroud chipped in 6 for staff/faculty, Decker added 5 points, and Wyland and Strayer each had 2. "A big 'Thank you' to everyone who participated in what was one of the best staff/faculty-student basketball games in a long time!" said Bottorf, who also provided photos.

Penn College Wrestlers Find Success at Bloomsburg, Bucknell

Penn College men’s and women’s basketball teams both went 0-3 last week, but several wrestlers found individual success in competition at Bloomsburg and Bucknell universities.

Basketball Teams, Fans Mark 'Red Out' for Heart Health

The men's and women's basketball teams kicked off Healthy Heart Month with a "Red Out" in Bardo Gymnasium on Tuesday night. Both teams wore red shoelaces and other apparel to support the cause, and members of the dance team wore red ribbons in their hair. At halftime of the women’s game, intramural assistant Jeremy R. Bottorf emceed a "Let’s Make a Deal" game in which students won cash, rally towels and T-shirts. At halftime of the men’s game, a "reddest" contest was held. Brianna M. Savini won, taking home a $50 Sheetz gift card. The game was sponsored by the Off Campus Housing Organization, College Health Services and the Athletics department.

Myers Named PSUAC 'Wrestler of the Week'

Penn College sophomore Tyler C. Myers (Centre Hall) was named the Penn State University Athletic Conference "Wrestler of the Week" for the period ending Jan. 29. Myers competed at the Jamestown Open in Jamestown, N.Y., on Saturday, placing third in the 157 weight class and going 4-1 at the tournament. Myers is 10-7 on the year with four pins. At Jamestown, he recorded two pins against wrestlers from Gannon and Niagara Community College. Next up, the Wildcats host Penn State New Kensington at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Senior Day, Halftime Exhibition Add to Lady Wildcats' Victory

As if scoring a team-high 12 points in a winning cause against University of Pittsburgh-Titusville wasn't enough, senior Casey L. Braun was honored during Saturday's game as the lone 2012 graduating member of the women's basketball team. Joined at midcourt by coach Matt Wilt and parents Tammy and David, the physician assistant major was honored as "every coach's dream" and for her hard work on and off the court. "Casey always provided the team with some good comic relief when needed," said assistant coach Erica L. Logan. "Her positive attitude and bigheartedness will truly be missed." The day was supplemented by a 10-minute game between the Little Lady Lancers' fifth- and sixth-grade teams from Loyalsock Township, who kept the energy level high between halves of the main event.

Club Members Place in Collegiate Karate Tournament

The Penn College Martial Arts Club competed in its first East Coast Collegiate Karate Union Tournament at West Chester University on Saturday. Club members Morgan A. Olbrich, Cory J. Buckles and Mathew C. Johnson competed in kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) against students representing Drexel, Temple, Rochester, William and Mary, Virginia and Penn State universities, as well as the host institution. Johnson and Buckles placed second and third, respectively, in the beginners division for kumite. Penn College will host the next ECCKU tournament on Feb. 11.

Championship Teams Recognized During Basketball Game

The Student Athletic Advisory Council held a game-day promotion at Wednesday's women's basketball game, honoring the Penn State University Athletic Conference champion cross-country and men's soccer teams. It was the ninth consecutive PSUAC championship for the cross-country runners, four of whom were named to this year's all-conference team. There also were four all-conference honorees on the men's soccer squad, which captured its second conference title in as many years. There also was a halftime game for students who donated a winter hat, gloves or mittens for The Salvation Army: Dining Services offered a $100 declining-balance meal plan to anyone who could sink a half-court shot in one try. (No one did.) The SAAC also gave away hand clappers or mini-throw basketballs to fans.

'Senior Day' Ceremony Honors Wildcat Wrestlers

The Penn College wrestling team split in its two matches over the past week while the men’s and women’s basketball teams tasted defeat – the men twice and the women once – and both of Saturday’s scheduled basketball games were postponed due to snow.

Archery Team Has New Coach, Faces Rebuilding Season

In a sense, the Penn College archery team is starting over this season. For the first time in more than a decade, it has a new head coach – and 12 of the 20 archers on its roster are freshmen. But that doesn’t mean it again won’t be among the best in the country. Although new to the top spot, Brian Parker has been an assistant coach with the team the past two seasons and has some pretty impressive credentials himself as he, like predecessor Chad Karstetter, was a three-time All-American while a student at the college.

Basketball 'Red Out' Among Heart-Health Activities

In support of February's designation as American Heart Month, Penn College will observe a "Red Out" during its men's and women's basketball games beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, in Bardo Gymnasium. Fans are encouraged to wear red in support of heart health, and a number of activities are scheduled to raise awareness. The evening will feature a Dance Team performance, a "Let's Make a Deal" game and a "Who's the Red-dest" contest. A "Red Out" cookie-decorating event, from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, in the Bush Campus Center lobby, also is scheduled.

Pfizer Foundation Again Funds Wildcats’ Trip to Baseball Tournament

For the second straight year, funding from the Pfizer Foundation will help the Penn College baseball team absorb the cost of traveling to a Spring Break tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The $5,000 grant will cover the Wildcats’ March 4-10 trip to The Ripken Experience, a training facility affiliated with Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., where they again will play against colleges from across the country.

Three Named to USCAA All-Academic Team

Senior Rachel Emmons (Washington, N.J.), sophomore Caleb Wise (Manheim) and freshman Adam Smith (Duncannon) earned United States Collegiate Athletic Association honors when named to the National All-Academic Team for non-USCAA sports. The three were starters on the Penn College tennis team. The All-Academic Team is comprised of student-athletes that have an overall (cumulative) grade-point average of 3.5 or greater. As successful as the trio was in the classroom, they excelled on the court in leading the Wildcats to a second-place finish in the 2011 season and at the Penn State University Athletic Conference Championships.
