Wildcat Baseball Team Claims Title; Softball Squad Second

It was "mission accomplished" for the Penn College baseball team Thursday in the Penn State University Athletic Conference championships, but the college's softball team fell just short of its goal. In baseball, the Wildcats of coach Chris Howard edged rival Penn State Beaver, 3-1, at Bowman Field in Williamsport to reclaim the conference crown they last won in 2006. The team completed a 31-13 season, including 19-4 in all conference games. At Williamsport's Elm Park in softball action, the Lady Wildcats needed one win Thursday against Penn State Hazleton to clinch their second straight PSUAC championship, but were swept 11-3 and 10-8 and finished second. PSUAC Baseball, Softball Pairings Announced; Play Begins Wednesday

Penn College baseball and softball teams are seeded Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, in their divisions for the Penn State University Athletic Conference championships that get under way Wednesday at Bowman Field and Elm Park in Williamsport. Play is scheduled to be double-elimination, but in the event of rainouts Wednesday, it will become a single-elimination tourney on Thursday.
'Senior Day' Observed for Baseball, Softball and Archery Teams

Staff/Faculty Defeat Students in 14-13 Softball Slugfest

Lisa Worth, athletic assistant, provided this game recap: The student team scored six runs in the first inning and three runs in the third to take a 9-4 lead. In the top of the fourth inning, the bats for the staff/faculty team came alive with six runs on six consecutive hits by Jeremy Bottorf, Mike Paulhamus, Benaiah Tucci, Joe Miller, Joe Simon and Andrew Gutkowski. The staff/faculty team scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The student team rallied for one run in the fifth and three runs in the sixth. Students had one more chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, but they went down in order and lost 14-13. Other members of the staff/faculty team were Alison Tagliaferri, Mike Hersh, Katie Greene, Craig Flint and Anthony Sofranek. Student team members were Dereck Smith, Reed Bogosh, Chad Mountcastle, Robert Capella, George King, Joe Caulfield, Nick Bechtel, Pete Rogan, Kat Potocek, Andrew Moore, Angela Charcas and Matthew Weiser.

Penn College Sophomore Completes Boston Marathon

Last November, Penn College sophomore Jeffrey J. Faherty ran his first marathon ever – in Harrisburg. Today, he's savoring the moment of running in – and completing – the Boston Marathon. Faherty covered the 26.2-mile course in 3 hours, 22 minutes April 21. "My seeding number was 4,244 (of more than 25,000 runners), so I was a little more than 4,000 back from the start," he said. "And when we went over crests of hills, just to see all of the heads out in front just bobbing and filling the road, and seeing all of the spectators on the sides cheering you on … You really can’t explain it. It was such an incredible feeling."
Students Overcome Staff to Win Volleyball Match

Bottorf, intramural/Fitness Center assistant, who said the night produced lots of great volleys between the two teams. "But in the end, the students took the game in a hot and muggy Bardo Gym," he said, providing this recap: The staff took the first set, 27-25, but the students responded by winning the second set, 27-25. The final set was won by the students, 15-8. Bottorf thanked both teams for participating. Staff/faculty were represented by Kevin Mix, Emily Miller, Kim Bolig, Dan Warner, Andy Gutkowski and Dan Bennett. The student team comprised Kristopher Sampsell, Adam and Nadine Dumm, Katie Hoffman, Joel Reese, Shawn Wesche and Steve Park.

PSUAC Baseball, Softball Championships Set in Williamsport

Penn State University Athletic Conference baseball and softball championships are scheduled to be played in Williamsport next week. Teams and the full tournament schedule will be announced after games this weekend. Both the Penn College baseball and softball teams are expected to be among the top seeds in the playoffs.
Penn College Hosts Eastern Regional Archery Event This Weekend

This weekend, members of the Penn College archery team get their final tune-up prior to next month's season-ending nationals, and it will come on their home turf. The Wildcats host the Eastern Regional Intercollegiate Championships Saturday and Sunday on campus, just outside the Field House. "So far this season, all of our teams have been doing well. The men's compound team has won all of the events we've gone to, except the Virginia State Indoors," said coach Chad Karstetter. "In this meet, hopefully, if they can shoot as good as they have been shooting they should come out on top."
'Women in Sports Day' Celebrated on Campus

Featured speaker Alison Tagliaferri, Wildcat women's basketball coach, talked about Title IX and the women who have had the most influence in her life. Three of those women were in attendance: the coach's mother, Holly, and grandmothers Jennie Tagliaferri and Marian Webster.

Deihm Named Penn College 'Student-Athlete of Week'

Tiffany Deihm named 'Student-Athlete of the Week' Tiffany Deihm of Mohnton, a graduate of Twin Valley High School, has been named Penn College's "Student-Athlete of the Week" for April 7-13. Deihm, a freshman pre-nursing student, has excelled on the mound for the Lady Wildcats women's softball team, posting a 4-0 record with 28 strikeouts in 24 innings of work and a 2.08 earned run average. Through Sunday, the Penn College women owned a 6-2 record. In their last five games, all wins, they had outscored their opponents 52-4. Each Monday, coaches who are in season nominate a student-athlete from their team. Nominees then are evaluated by college athletic office personnel, who select the student-athlete of the week.
