Penn College Represented at World University Games

When archery competition begins at the 2009 Summer World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia, Penn College will have two faces in the crowd. Zachary Plannick of Corapolis, 20, who will be a junior in the fall, and Glen Thomas of Mercer, 19, who will be a sophomore, are members of the United States archery squad. Plannick will compete on the men’s compound team and Thomas on the men’s recurve team.
Wildcat Athletic Teams Continue to Outdo Themselves

Who says it can’t get any better for Penn College athletics? During the 2007-08 school year, the Wildcats collectively won 207 of 293 games, a .706 winning percentage. But in the recently completed 2008-09 school year, they not only improved on that mark with a combined .719 winning percentage (215-84-3), they also captured three national team championships, six conference titles and six of its teams participated for the first time in United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships. In addition, Penn College was honored with the first Penn State University Athletic Conference Chancellor’s Cup.

Penn College Names New Golf Coach

After nine seasons that included six consecutive conference championships and an incredible win streak that reached 155 matches from 2003-08, Penn College golf coach Chet Schuman is retiring. But he passes the torch to someone very familiar with the program: Matt Haile, who placed second in the 2002 Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association championship and won the conference’s individual crown in 2003 as a member of the Wildcat team that began the remarkable string of victories. He also was the Penn State University Athletic Conference individual runner-up in 2005 when the team won its third straight conference title.
Wildcat Baseball Coach Again Honored by PSUAC

For the second season in a row, Penn College baseball coach Chris Howard has been named the Penn State University Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. During the recently completed season, Howard guided the Wildcats to a 28-3 PSUAC record and their second straight conference championship. Overall, Penn College was 36-9. “I’m excited. It’s a great honor anytime you are recognized by your peers as the best for that particular year,” Howard said. “I think one thing I’ve learned as a coach over the last three years is that you’re only as good as your players. Winning Coach of the Year is a testament as to how good your players are. I really want to give it to the team. I hope I had something to do with it, but I had a great group of guys,” Howard added.
Penn College Archers Rewrite Record Book

Over the past 12 years, Penn College archery teams have done very well on the national level, but, this year, they rewrote the book. Competing in the 42nd annual U.S. Intercollegiate Archery Championships with more than 30 other colleges and universities and more than 200 archers at Long Beach, Calif., May 15-17, the Wildcats won a school-record three team championships, had one individual champion, had a school-record seven All-Americans, finished third overall (the highest in school history) and qualified two archers for the World University Games.
Penn College Awarded First PSUAC Chancellor’s Cup

No. 1 in golf. No. 1 in men’s soccer. No. 1 in men’s cross country. No. 1 in tennis. No. 1 in baseball. To say that Penn College athletic teams dominated the Penn State University Athletic Conference during the 2008-09 school year would be an understatement. But in recognition of the Wildcats’ achievements, the college has been awarded the first Chancellor’s Cup.
Five Penn College Baseball, Softball Players Honored by USCAA

Five Penn College baseball and softball players received postseason honors from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. In baseball, senior Devon Liquori (Hawley) and sophomore Mark Shaffer (Hanover) were named to the first team; senior Phil Woodring (Waynesboro) received honorable mention. During this week’s USCAA championships, where Penn College went 1-2 and finished in a four-way tie for third, Liquori led the tournament with two home runs, was No. 1 in slugging percentage at 1.222 and tied for fifth in batting average at .556 (5-for-9 with four runs batted in and four runs scored). Other Wildcats among the statistical batting leaders were Garrett Hornung (Emporium), who hit .375, and James Craft (York), who hit .333. Hornung is a freshman and Craft a senior. Teamwise at the national tournament, Penn College was No. 4 in pitching staff earned-run average (5.57) and No. 6 in batting (.222) and fielding (.925). St. Catharine (Ky.) College went 4-0 and won the national championship, while Columbia Union (Md.) finished second. In softball, senior Lisa Miller (Cogan Station) and sophomore Trisha Moser (Watsontown) were named to the USCAA All-Academic Team. Miller is a physical fitness specialist major and Moser a nursing major.
Penn College Baseball Team Eliminated at Nationals

HAMPTON, Va. – Penn College's baseball season ended after just three games in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships and coach Chris Howard said his team never found its stride. "We just didn't play well. The last three games we just couldn't get over the hump. We played bad for three games. We won one, but we didn't play a solid game," Howard said after his Wildcats were eliminated Wednesday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium following a 7-0 loss to Columbia Union College of Takoma Park, Md.
Seven Penn College Baseball, Softball Players Receive Postseason Honors

Five Penn College baseball players and two softball players have been named to the Penn State University Athletic Conference All-Conference Team. Honored in baseball are pitchers Adam Thomke (South Williamsport) and Mark Shaffer (Hanover), first baseman Devon Liquori (Hawley), shortstop Phil Woodring (Waynesboro) and center fielder Dane Glick (Belleville). Penn College, under coach Chris Howard, went 28-3 in PSUAC play and captured its second straight conference crown. Penn College softball players cited were Lauren Fuller (South Williamsport) and Jamye Mease (Elizabethtown). The Wildcats, coached by Roger Harris, posted a 13-9 record in PSUAC action and finished second in the conference for the second year in a row.
