PCToday Photo Gallery - A Week in Guatemala: More Than 1,600 Patients in Four Days

Forrest R. Persing of Snyderstown, a recent graduate of the Physician Assistant Program, spent a week in Guatemala this summer as part of his final senior internship. Persing was part of a 55-member team that included one physician assistant, several nurses, a pharmacist, medical assistants and about 14 youths, as well as translators and bus drivers. The group treated 1,674 patients during four days of clinics in rural parts of the country.

Persing's otoscope broke the first day, so he had to make due with whatever light source he had.

Persing and his 15-year-old translator, Christian, take the history of three patients.

A difficult case for Persing, for which he asked help from one of the infectious-disease doctors.

The group had to translate from Su’tu’hil to Spanish then to English, needing two translators.
