College Hosts Camps for High Schoolers Interested in Health Careers

EMT-Paramedic Camp Health Careers Camp Penn College hosted nearly 50 high school students on its campus on June 16-17 to learn about a variety of health careers. The college’s School of Health Sciences offered two activities: Health Careers Camp and EMT-Paramedic Camp, both of which were open to students entering grades nine to 12. The camps offered hands-on workshops and opportunities to network with Penn College students and faculty, as well as working professionals in the health-care industry.

School of Health Sciences Holds In-Service for Preceptors

Darby Lewes, an English faculty member at Lycoming College, offered a workshop titled “Portrait of a Student as a Young Wolf: Motivating Students.” The school offers the in-service annually to its preceptors, who can earn continuing education units for their attendance.

Women's Volleyball Team Honors Senior Members

Oswald by her parents, Denny and Susan, at midcourt A crowd of more than 200 people watched in Bardo Gymnasium on Thursday night as the Penn College women's volleyball team defeated Penn State Abington and said a tearful "goodbye" to seniors Alyssa M. Covas and Ashley D. Oswald. Covas, of Pottsville, enrolled in the applied health studies: occupational therapy assistant concentration, and Oswald, of Altoona, a dental hygiene student, were joined by family members and introduced by coach Bambi Hawkins. All varsity Wildcat teams – including women's volleyball, which defeated Abington 25-4, 25-9 and 25-9 – pay tribute to their graduating members during the regular season.

Occupational Therapy Student Receives National, State Scholarships

A student in the occupational therapy assistant major at Penn College was recently honored with national and state scholarship awards. The American Occupational Therapy Foundation awarded Holly L. Montarsi, of Howard, the Willard and Spackman Memorial Scholarship. This $2,000 award is generally offered to post-baccalaureate applicants; however, the selection committee recognized Montarsi’s sustained excellence in academic achievement in the associate-degree program, her commitment to the profession and her potential for future professional development. Montarsi was also presented with a $1,000 scholarship award from the Pennsylvania Occupational Therapy Association.

Occupational Therapy Students Present Educational Posters

Eighteen students organized the event and presented posters. Ergonomics was among topics addressed. In celebration of Occupational Therapy Month, students enrolled in the occupational therapy assistant major offered a poster session Tuesday in the Madigan Library. Eighteen students in two courses collaborated to organize the event and offer educational presentations on occupational therapy programs for adult day care, community corrections, adolescents with developmental disability, ergonomics, wellness at a senior center and a summer handwriting camp. The posters will be displayed throughout the coming week.

Students to Present Poster Sessions for Occupational Therapy Month

On April 29, as part of Occupational Therapy Month, students from Penn College’s occupational therapy assistant program will present interactive poster sessions on occupational therapy programming for populations in the community. Special topics will include occupational therapy programs for: adult day care, community corrections, adolescents with developmental disability, ergonomics, wellness at a senior center, and a summer handwriting camp. The public is invited to the presentations, which are scheduled from 2-5 p.m. in the college’s Madigan Library.

Alumni Return to Campus to Celebrate Program’s 20th Anniversary

The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at Penn College celebrates its 20th graduating class this summer. In honor of this landmark, the program, in concert with Alumni Relations and Workforce Development & Continuing Education, sponsored a full day of educational and social events for alumni on May 30.

College Presents Awards to Distinguished Staff, Part-Time Faculty

Occupational Therapy Assistant Students Present Posters

An occupational therapy assistant student dicusses occupational therapy in home design. Visitors could play sports on a Nintendo Wii - a modern method of rehabilitation. As part of Occupational Therapy Month, students from Penn College’s occupational therapy assistant program presented poster sessions on emerging or contemporary areas of occupational therapy practice Wednesday in the college’s Madigan Library.

OTA Students Attend Professional Conference

Students from Penn College’s Occupational Therapy Assistant Club and their adviser recently attended the American Occupational Therapy Association’s annual conference, where they attended workshops, short courses, poster presentations, roundtable discussions, meetings and forums.
