Penn College Names Vice President for Academic Affairs/Provost

Paul L. Starkey has been appointed vice president for academic affairs/provost (the chief academic officer) at Penn College. He will begin his duties on July 1. Starkey’s hiring was approved Monday by the college’s board of directors. He comes to Penn College from Delta State University, Cleveland, Miss., where he has served most recently as chair of the Division of Management, Marketing and Business Administration, and professor of management in the College of Business. He had been employed at the university since 1986.
Penn College Captures Second Straight PSUAC Team Tennis Title

It was another championship week for Penn College – and more may be in store. On Sunday, the coed tennis team won its second straight Penn State University Athletic Conference title. That came one day after the women’s volleyball team advanced to Saturday’s PSUAC semifinals and three days before the men’s soccer team steps into action Wednesday to begin defense of its PSUAC title. Welding Students Create Bench in Memory of Former Classmate

Members of the American Welding Society student chapter at Penn College designed and fabricated a bench to memorialize Colt W. Jenny, a former classmate who died in a September 2008 automobile accident. “To the whole group, Colt was a good friend who was always in good spirits,” said Kade E. Poorman, a May graduate of the welding and fabrication engineering technology major and an AWS member. “He was always smiling and had a good attitude toward just about anything. Overall, he was just a good friend to all of us, due to having spent so much time with everyone in the (welding) shop.”
Penn College Ranked Among ‘Best Baccalaureate Colleges’ in North

Penn College has earned a spot among the “Best Baccalaureate Colleges” in the North Region for the 2010 edition of America’s Best Colleges by U.S. News Media Group. The annual rankings, which include more than 1,400 schools nationwide, were announced in the September issue of U.S. News & World Report, available on newsstands and

. This was the first time Penn College, a special mission affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University, was ranked among the top tier for baccalaureate colleges. In previous rankings, the college had appeared in the third or fourth tier.
Penn College Archers Recount World University Games Experience

In a word, Penn College archers Zachary Plannick, of Coraopolis, and Glen Thomas, of Mercer, both described their recent World University Games experience as “amazing.” Plannick especially had good reason to do so. The 20-year-old, who will be a junior in the fall, came home with a gold medal as a member of the championship U.S. men’s compound team.
Wildcat Archer Brings Home Gold at World University Games

Saturday was a day of perfection for Penn College archer Zachary Plannick, of Coraopolis. The 20-year-old, who will be a junior at the college in the fall, scored with all 24 of his arrows and helped the United States men’s compound team to a gold medal at the 25th World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia. In the finale, the United States, which qualified fifth, defeated Mexico, which qualified third, 23-19. Russia, the top qualifier among 12 teams, captured a bronze with a 21-19 win over No. 10 qualifier Indonesia.
Penn College Among 'Great Colleges To Work For, 2009'

Penn College is among 39 institutions receiving Honor Roll recognition in The Chronicle of Higher Education's survey of "Great Colleges to Work For." The Honor Roll lists the top 10 four-year colleges (and the top three community colleges) in each of the survey's size categories, based on the number of times they were recognized within individual categories. In results announced in a special supplement of The Chronicle of Higher Education, Penn College was named one of the top 10 medium-sized institutions (enrollment of 3,000-9,999 students) in the nation. President Davie Jane Gilmour said the national recognition confirms what many employees tell her they experience daily.
Penn College Represented at World University Games

When archery competition begins at the 2009 Summer World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia, Penn College will have two faces in the crowd. Zachary Plannick, of Coraopolis, 20, who will be a junior in the fall, and Glen Thomas, of Mercer, 19, who will be a sophomore, are members of the United States archery squad. Plannick will compete on the men’s compound team and Thomas on the men’s recurve team.
College Celebrates Two Decades as Penn State Affiliate

Few institutions would mark a 20th anniversary while planning for a centennial celebration just five years later, but Penn College plans to do just that. Twenty years ago, on July 1, 1989, the legislation that created the college was signed into law by Gov. Robert P. Casey. It transformed the former Williamsport Area Community College into a wholly owned subsidiary of The Corporation for Penn State. To mark the 20th anniversary of its Penn State affiliation, Penn College is launching a “Countdown to the Centennial.” This five-year program (2009-14) will honor the full history of the institution, beginning in 1914, when the first adult-education class was offered in the basement of the former Williamsport High School – a building that now serves as the college's Klump Academic Center.
Penn College TV Series Receives Top ‘Communicator’ Award

An episode of Penn College's “degrees that work.” career-awareness television series, a co-production with WVIA-TV, has received the highest honor in the 2009 Communicator Awards, which honors the best creative work in the communications fields. The episode, which profiled careers in welding, won the Award of Excellence, also known as the Gold Communicator Award, in the documentary category. The recognition is given to those "entries whose ability to communicate puts them among the best in the field."
