College Presents Humanitarian/Citizenship Award to Alumnus

Humanitarian/Citizenship Award presented Penn College presented Brian M. Webster with an Alumni Humanitarian/Citizenship Award during a Winter Commencement ceremony at the Community Arts Center. Webster was awarded an associate degree in nursing from the college in 2006 and received the Shirley Novosel Memorial Award for clinical excellence and client advocacy that same year. A registered nurse clinical supervisor for the Susquehanna Health Emergency Department, Webster has participated in five medical-relief trips to earthquake-ravaged Haiti since January 2010.

Nursing Graduate Receives VFW Scholarship

A recent nursing graduate from Penn College was awarded a scholarship from the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Nursing Foundation of Pennsylvania, which administers the Jack E. Barger Sr. Scholarship on behalf of the VFW, recently announced six recipients of the scholarship for 2011, including Travis M. Rupert, who earned an associate degree in nursing from the college in May.

Nursing Faculty Member Earns Doctorate

Dottie M. Mathers A faculty member in the nursing program at Penn College recently received a Doctorate in Nursing Practice from Chatham University. Dottie M. Mathers, associate professor of medical-surgical nursing, focused her doctoral studies on improving outcomes for patients with central venous access devices. Mathers has been a faculty member at the college since 1991. She holds a Master of Nursing from Misericordia University, a Bachelor of Nursing from Eastern Washington University and an associate degree from Northampton Community College. She also maintains a per-diem staff position on a critical-care step-down unit at Susquehanna Health.

Nursing Faculty Member Earns Credential

Dina L. Wilson Dina L. Wilson, associate professor of nursing programs at Penn College, passed the National League for Nursing Certification Exam for Certified Nurse Educator in December. The CNE is deemed a mark of professionalism by the National League for Nursing. For academic nurse educators, it establishes nursing education as a specialty area of practice and creates a means for faculty to demonstrate their expertise in this role. Wilson has been a faculty member for three years at Penn College, where she teaches courses in all three of the college’s nursing tracks: the practical nursing certificate, the nursing associate degree, and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

College Receives Grant to Provide Practical Nursing Scholarships

Penn College received funding to offer tuition scholarships to disadvantaged students pursuing practical nursing certificates. The $6,521 grant was provided by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation Inc. as part of its LPN Student Assistance Program. “This important funding will offer a number of very deserving individuals a much-needed boost toward becoming excellent contributors to our health-care system,” said Sharon G. Auker, director of nursing at the college.

Foundation Awards Grants to Support Nursing Students

Penn College received grants totaling more than $70,000 to award need-based scholarships to students enrolled in its nursing majors. The Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation awarded two Nursing Education Grants for 2010-11. A $59,455 grant was awarded to aid students pursuing degrees in nursing on the college’s main campus in Williamsport and a $10,849 grant was awarded to aid students enrolled in the noncredit practical nursing program at the college’s North Campus near Wellsboro.

Blue Cross of Northeastern PA Grants to Aid Nursing Students

Penn College received grants totaling more than $34,000 to award scholarships to students enrolled in its nursing majors. As a result of a donation from Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation awarded two Supplemental Nursing Education Grants to the college to aid retention of students who, for financial reasons, might not otherwise be able to continue their education.

New Scholarship to Benefit Nursing Students at Penn College

A gift from the estate of a longtime school librarian is being used to establish a scholarship fund for students in nursing majors at Penn College. The estate of Barbara Oldt has donated more than $224,000 to Penn College to establish the Mary Ellen Horlacher Oldt Nursing Scholarship, which will serve as a permanent source of scholarship awards for nursing students at Penn College, including students in the pre-nursing program. The endowment is expected to generate approximately $9,000 in awards per year for successful applicants from Union, Snyder and Northumberland counties.

Abbygale J. Willow Named SGA’s ‘Student of the Month’

Abbygale J. Willow Abbygale J. Willow, a nursing major from Thompsontown, is the Student Government Association's latest Student of the Month at Penn College. A full-time student on track to graduate in May from the School of Health Sciences, Willow is a nurse extern in the postoperative orthopedic/neurosurgery unit at Harrisburg Hospital. She has logged more than 200 volunteer hours there, is a campus tutor in several health-related subjects and recently assisted at a community flu-shot clinic in Hughesville. “I can honestly say Abby is a very dedicated student with a very big heart who truly makes a difference in the lives of her patients,” her faculty nominator wrote.

Nursing Faculty Member Earns Master’s Degree

Barbie D. Hoover Barbie D. Hoover, instructor of nursing programs at Penn College, recently earned a Master of Science in Nursing Education from Walden University. Hoover is a 1982 graduate of the Williamsport Hospital School of Nursing and holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Lycoming College. She taught part time in the nursing program at Penn College for 11 years before joining the full-time faculty in January 2009. In 2001, she was presented the college’s Part-Time Teaching Excellence Award.
