Physics Faculty Member Presents at Conference for Educators

A member of the physics faculty at Penn College recently presented a talk at the 59th Annual Conference of the American Association of Physics Teachers Central Pennsylvania Section. David S. Richards, associate professor of physics, presented a session titled “Analyzing Centripetal Force Using Spherical Neodymium Magnets.” The conference was held March 11-12 at Penn State Schuylkill.
Physics Faculty Member Earns Doctorate

David S. Richards, associate professor of physics at Penn College, recently completed his doctoral studies at The Pennsylvania State University. Richards earned a doctorate in instructional systems from Penn State. His dissertation was titled: “A Case Study of Students’ Conceptions on Electromagnetic Induction While Viewing a Series of Videos, Animations, and Interactive Simulations.”
Faculty Member Appointed to Editorial Board of Academic Journal

David L. Evans, professor of biology at Penn College, was recently appointed to the editorial board of BioScience. BioScience is the monthly, peer-reviewed journal of the American Institute of Biological Sciences. AIBS is an umbrella organization for around 200 biological-sciences societies. In his role, Evans will seek contributors and peer-reviewers for the journal, specifically in human biology. Evans’ positions as a member of the editorial board and chair of the Public Relations Committee for the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society will help facilitate that goal.
Funeral to Be Held Friday for Faculty Member

The funeral will be Friday for Steven R. Parker, an assistant professor of physics in Penn College's School of Integrated Studies, who died Monday, Nov. 16. The college flags were lowered in memory of Parker, who joined the college faculty in Fall 2004 as an instructor of environmental technology in the School of Natural Resources Management. The service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon-1:30 p.m. A full obituary was published in Thursday's Williamsport Sun-Gazette.
Biology Faculty Member Named to ‘Who’s Who in America’

Chris E. Kule, assistant professor of biology (anatomy/physiology) at Penn College, was selected for inclusion in the 2010 Edition of “Who’s Who in America.” The 2010 Edition – which is scheduled for publication in October – will feature more than 95,000 of the nation’s highest achievers: from business and politics to health care and science, to entertainment and the arts. The biographies are compiled by Marquis Who’s Who editors using standards developed more than 110 years ago.
Faculty Member Preps Responders for Animal-Disease Outbreak

Expanding upon his assistance to American Indian tribes preparing for agricultural terrorism, a faculty member at Penn College recently trained the local County Animal Response Team in how to deal with an intentional livestock infection. Steven R. Parker, certified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a Master Trainer, presented the agency’s “Foreign Animal Disease Response and Counter-Terrorism Preparedness” course at the Lycoming County Emergency Services complex in Williamsport.
Madigan Library Forum to Put Participants at ‘Scene of the Crime’

Forensic science, a theme that runs through a number of popular television shows, will be “Exhibit A” in a public forum to be held in November on Penn College’s main campus in Williamsport. “Fingerprints and Blood Spatter: Using Science to Solve Crimes,” the latest in a series of informative presentations, will be held from 4-5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in Room 200 of the college’s Madigan Library. Participants will join Kelly B. Butzler, department head for natural sciences and an assistant professor of chemistry in the School of Integrated Studies, in a hands-on analysis of their own fingerprints. Attendees also will view and discuss a video of a real crime that was solved by blood-spatter interpretation.
Excellence in Teaching Award Presented to Biology Professor

Penn College has honored Carol J. Kafer, associate professor of biology, with an Excellence in Teaching Award. Excellence in Teaching Awards are presented to full-time faculty members who have been nominated by their students and colleagues for excellence in instructional performance. The award was presented Saturday during a Summer Commencement ceremony at the Community Arts Center, Williamsport.
Distinguished Teaching Awards Presented to Two Faculty Members

Penn College honored two faculty members with Distinguished Teaching Awards at Spring Commencement ceremonies. The college’s highest level of recognition for a faculty member − the Veronica M. Muzic Master Teacher Award − was presented to Dr. William B. Urosevich, associate professor of biology/anatomy and physiology. An Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Eric D. Pruden, instructor of automotive electronics.
Physics Faculty Member Earns Distinguished Service Award

David S. Richards, associate professor of physics at Penn College, was recently honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the Central Pennsylvania Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers. Richards served as president of CPS-AAPT in 2006 and as vice president in 2005. He just completed his term as immediate past president. As vice president, he organized the group’s 2006 conference, held at Penn College.
